| i am starting to look for a different boat . what is considered low hours for a outboard motor(both 4 stroke and 2 stroke)? |

| Anything under 50 hrs/year I would consider low hours, especially if it's maintained properly and RPM's check out. |

| Talk to the owner about how well the motor's been maintained. I.E. regular oil change, low unit fluid changes, fogging. etc.. See how readily it starts up and how well it runs. If he can't run it for you in a tank (garbage can or hose adaptor), I wouldn't buy it. A motor that's been regularly maintained "as per the manual" can be preferred than one with higher running time that's been unused for years w/o maintaince.

| Too low of hours is not good. Motors need to be ran. If I could choose between a 5 year old boat with 50 hours vs 500 hours I'd buty the one with 500 every day |

| At 5 years I'd probally get one closer to 50 than 500 but ten years I'd rather have 500 than 100. I would say low hours are 20 hours a year. Myself I get 75-100, but another thing to think of is the size of the lake, my lakes are "small" many people say my lakes that are small are harder on a motor than 100 mile lakes, reason being my motor is not on plane longer than 10 minutes, lots and lots of short trips being harder on it than a few long trips, example me with 75-100 hours is comparable to a big lake boat with 150-200hours a year. I buy into this thought as well |

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I've owned 6 boats. 2 of the 6 were bought from fairly older guys who barely used the boat. One hadn't been used in over a year and a half ( an '01 135 Rude). The other had 15 hours in 2 years ('12 Yammy F150).
I'll give you one guess as to which of the 6 boats were the 2 best I own/owned, and by a long shot....

I'm not motor-savvy by a looong shot but of the 3 Yammy's I've had since '89 not a one has given me issues - until this last bugger with some pitting issues on the lower unit. A 150-4 dammit... |

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I love/d them both equally. The Evinrude was a Ficht, but the often documented issues on those weren't really cropping up all that often on the smaller block engines. It was the 200/250's that were the ticking time bombs for a lot of guys |
