Hi guys!

I´m wondering which flourocarbon I should use as leader material and I hope you can help me.
I plan chucking really big swimbaits (10 to 20 Oz or even heavier) for Pike.
I already checked out the flourocarbon Seaguar makes and I don´t know whats more importend the diameter or the actual breaking strain.
An example:
The Big Game Blue Label have an diameter of 1.38mm (.54in) and breaking strain of 180lb
The Big Game Flouro Premier have an diameter of 1.28mm (.050 in) and is rated 170lb

The breaking strain is quite the same but not the thickness.
So, what is more important regarding abrasion: The diameter or breaking strain? What is more crucial?

BTW: What lb test would you use for that heavy lures?

For baits that heavy, I would use the 180 or higher if possible.

I use 200 lb sufix hard mono, 1,4 mm. Works great and Never had a problem, also use it for almost everything Else, except The small stuff,

With any fluorocarbon > 80 pounds the issue won't be if the leader breaks it the strength "lp test" of the main line that's likely more critical. This is particularly true if your using braid.

It depends on what your mainline is. If your mainline is only 100lbs but your leader is 150lbs it's not going to matter your mainline will just break first. I used 80lb and was happy with it, never broke off on a cast or had a pike (not giants but 30+) bite through it. But, I did switch to 150lb because it stayed straighter and didn't tangle in my spinnerbaits when I cast and it also allowed me to work jerk/glide baits with it.

I disagree with this. i have had flourocarbon up to 100# bitten off. IMHO use minimum 130# flourocarbon or use wire.

Brad Nelson (BNelson) makes some of the best heavy duty fluoral carbon leaders I've ever used. I believe he still make them in the 180 lb. class and I've never experienced a bite off with those.

He's fishing for pike, not musky. I've used 60 lb fluorocarbon for pike (up to ~ 25 lb's) for 10 years never had a bit off.

I was just saying that I've never got bitten off. I'm sure it could happen, especially with a monster pike. But I do think that for smaller pike (under 40") your fine with light leaders. My tip up leader when ice fishing for pike, is only 25lbs and I've never had that break. Ive caught multiple fish in the mid 30"s. Single treble too so 99% of the time the leader is fully in their mouth.

If he is fishing with 20oz + swimbaits, he is fishing for muskie sized pike.
They will cut through 100# mono just like a muskie.
Personnaly i just buy myself a 50m long spool of 49 strain wire and change when necessary
