There is a river that I like to fish that is pretty small.  It runs from a dam below a lake into the Mississippi.  The river is very shallow and you cannot run upstream without a tunnel jet (which I do not have) right at the dam is plunge pool, maybe 5 or 6 acres.  There is a campground there that has a shoreline where I can launch my boat but this is the only access to the water.  The only way that they let you access the water is if you pay for a campsite ($25).  Is it just me or does this seem crazy unreasonable.  This is the closest muskie waters to me and I like to go out there and fish for 3 or 4 hours weeknights every once in a while.  I just cant handle paying $25 to fish a small body of water for 3 or 4 hours.  Any recommendations or ideas?  The only other way I could access this is sell my 2010 1750 Fishhawk and buy a tunnel jet, which I have considered but then I loose a lot of nice features that a fishing boat has, pretty much all of them.  Anyone have any similar situations?

It's not unreasonable if they own the land and access.

It just seems unreasonable to charge that much just to launch a boat. I would probably be ther 2-3X a week if it was a $5 fee which seems pretty standard in my experience

I get your point, but they own it and can charge whatever they want. They likely don't want or need the angler traffic.

I hate to say it but they are likely looking more for campers than boaters.

Do you park your boat & trailer in your campsite?

Have you approached the owner about a season pass? Flip him a hundo for the year. I'm sure his thinking is he doesn't want to mess around for a couple bucks cleaning up after guys launching at his landing. After-all he is in the campground business not the fishing business.

Apply for a part time job there. Work 4 hours a week. Problem solved.

Unless they have a lot of unused space, they probably don't want the hassle of having truck/trailer rigs parking on their property. Take up a lot of space.
A bar across the lake from me has a private launch and they only let folks us it that will put their rig somewhere else. I launch there and then my wife drives the truck and trailer home. They tried being nice and letting everyone use it and people would park their truck/trailer in front of the two cabins they rent out, effectively boxing in people who were paying good money to be on the lake for a week. If they had more space, I am sure they would like to have more people use because it would support the bar, but they don't.

My landing would be named "Dadson" & launch fee would be $100.

Could you pole your way up? Any landowners on the stretch that will rent you something? Could you cartop something and drop in from somewhere close? If none of those apply, you could continue to be hot about it or you can become a "regular" and see what develops. There are plenty of guys who spend $25 in gas to fish 3-4 hours on this board. You're right, no question. It's too much, but that doesn't help you fish. I think I saw a jet sled for $4000 on the musky flea market on fb, though.

We had Mike Keyes has a speaker couple month ago at our tc chapter,,he said this year he's going to try small rivers with a jet ski setup.
Also could you just fish it in a pair of waders and a mountain bike if there's a path through woods,,this combo works for a lot of guys. Mountain bike grouse hunting is deadly.

Maybe look at it from this point of view...............$25 to launch will pretty much keep that stretch of river to yourself.

And if you launch anywhere else you won't catch anything

I think I know exactly where this is. There is a small canoe/kayak access downstream of this place and I have seen people launch small (12 footers) aluminum boats there. You could also find a used canoe and mount a transom trolling motor to it. Had I not left for a region that has more muskie water, a canoe would have been my new muskie "rig".

I know the area very well and am firmiliar with the canoe launches. The campground is the only place i can get my rig in and i have tp drive about 45 minutes to get there so the part that kills me is im also spending $30 in gas to get there and home. Im not hot about the issue, just looking for other options. I appreciate everyones imput and will keep my eyes open for other ideas! The possibility of not enough space for trailers ciuld be the issue.

Pretty sure I know that launch and river and campground. From what I hear it's a good trip. I'd be happy to split the $25 and run it in a canoe At least until I can find a smaller river rig...

I have paid $15-25 to launch at times.. If its their property and they own and maintain the launch---Price seems about right. They have to make a living also and don't work for free---If its too much--I am sure you can find free state launches somewhere around you.... Why not just fish it a couple times a season, and find other waters nearby to fish more often...

Around here (North Bay) most launches are $10 in an $10 out, so $20 per trip. Like anything, if you want it bad enough, you will pay the rate.

300$ a season reasonable? Find three others to go in on a camp site

In all honesty, I do think $25 is a little high since around me the average is normally 5-15 at places that aren't free. But I don't think $25 is absolutely crazy as long it is a nice launch way good parking areas and mostly well kept (no trash and semi decent bathrooms) I remember I went to launch somewhere one time and it was not a nice launch, and the guy said that it was $30! $30 to launch on a pebble ramp and then park in a lot full of potholes and filled with trash. But One of the nicest launches I've been at was in Michigan and it was also a gravel launch but it had a nice parking area and clean bathrooms (I'm talking better than mcdonalds) and it was free to launch.

Whether we think its "high" or not, does not matter. The owner sets the rate based off of supply and demand.

The launch could be the crappiest you have seen, but if its the only one, you have no choice.

I used to live in the area, we always used to launch at the public access on the lake above. You can cut straight across the dam and portage your boat down, there is a trail that cuts down to the river. Not sure how heavy your boat is, if too heavy you can always tie up above the dam and walk down with some gear and cast from the bottom platform of the dam....

Just saw you have a 17ft boat, still have a good shot casting from the dam down into the pool, just make sure the rollers are dry, they can get pretty slick. Food for thought as well I used to use a 60 year old 12ft aluminum to fish down there. Might be a cheaper solution.

If it eases your pain any, I'll drive 120 mi. each way to musky fish... If I add it all up (and I have), I'm droppin' a Benjamin every trip..
