Hey everyone. Looking over the site and I'm real excited to start learning from the wealth of information on this site.

I'm brand new to Musky Fishing. I'm wondering what reel to buy for trolling.
I have 2 rods. One 8'6'' Heavy. I use for casting. And 1 7' Heavy I plan on using for trolling.

I do need to buy a good trolling reel. I was looking at Okuma Cold Waters or Convector. I live in Canada, and in November it gets very frigid.
Any thoughts? What gear ratio would you recommend? What are your favourite lures for trolling Musky in the Summer and the Fall?

I also have a very basic reel for casting - Abu Ambassadeur 5:3:1. I was looking at getting a low profile reel or will this one suffice for the LOTW for now?

I know I have a lot of questions here . I'm trying to do my reading but sometimes when you get info it can be biased from sponsors etc. Thanks for reading and thanks for your time.

Tight lines

get glass rods for trolling...your on right track with trolling reels and your casting set up will work but A low profile baitcaster be very nice for LOTW...ID suggest one of the abus depending on what you wanna spend or a Lexa...Can get Lexa startinng at $135 or the abus go from $149-$300 for a beast...Tons of Lure options do few searchs but that more depended on where you are fishing and time of year...I dont troll a Ton Mainly Cast

The okuma trolling reels you mentioned will be fine. 20 size for braid, 30 size for mono. Your 7ft rod is it grapbite? Will be fine until it gets really cold. U can buy a cheap fiberglass rod with a 4oz rating like the berkely big game or bass pro power plus.

For a casting reel, what do you want to cast? What types of structure or where do you want to troll?

Is there one Okuma Reel better than the other? I was thinking the cold water just because of temperature.
I'll be casting bucktails 8s/10s, jakes etc. I was thinking of getting the casting reel for this. I'd pair it with my 8'6'' Shimano Compre.
I'll be casting a lot into rock structures/sunken islands.
For Casting smaller plastics and smaller cranks I was going to use the 7' Shimano Convergence with the Abu.
For trolling it now looks like I'll need a fibreglass rod. For LOTW where 50" are the goal, what size would you recommend? I was thinking a 7' H if I can find. From what I can read I'll be trolling looking for them in 25' of water. I'll need some good advice of which lures to use to reach this depth as well if possible.
I plan on purchasing the trolling secrets book as well. I understand this stuff is a science. But I'm willing to learn and see what I can use in the areas I fish.

Again, thanks for the help.

Also, what gear ratio should I look into for both reels? I'm not the biggest guy so I don't want to work TOO hard lol...

For trolling i like the lower gear ratio. I think they are 4:1. Those two reels have big power handles with two spots to bolt them. Use the one that gets the bigger bite. If you get the coldwater, be careful the part behind the handle are under spring tension and those parts can get away from you. The convector does not have that spring, most reels don't.

I think I'll get the Shimano TDR and Convector.
Thanks so much everyone.
Which line do you like to use to troll? When targetting those 50" on LOTW, CASTING I use braid.
I trolled last weekend with braid and a 3 ft mono leader I made in 25 FOW. I'm wondering what would be best?

I'm finding a tough time finding a Heavy fibreglass trolling rod. I can find a MH no problem. Think a MH is good? Or should I continue to look for a H? Thanks

I don't troll a lot, but I use a berkley big game rod and have two shakespeare tidewater TWBT2040C70 7' rods. They seem a little heavier power than the big game rods and pretty nice for $30. I have not had a headlock on them yet though, but happy so far.
