Taking my girlfriend and her 2 kids to LOTW next week.

I've heard some stories about having to have a notarized letter from their father saying it's ok to take them out of the country.

We took them to Mexico on spring break with no issues.

I have to believe the notarized letter thing is a wives tale. How would the people at the border even know who the father is!?

Hiya,

I don't believe it needs to be notarized, but it must include a phone number in which to call. It is a safe bet to have one ready as it would be easy to not return and kidnap the kids unbeknown to them or the other parent.

Play safe and bring a letter with a number in which to call...

I have a cabin on the Canadian side and have been crossing with kids since they were babys now my oldest is 18. The younger they are the more questions you will get asked because they are worried about babys and little kids that might not be able to answer their questions if they question the kids. Bring a letter and it does not have to be notarized, he just needs to state it's ok to take them and the dates you will be there along with his contact info. If you dont have a letter and the kids cant give them the answers their looking for, the border patrol is not going to go out of their way to contact her ex. They will just turn you around at the border and send you home. The kids also need a passport or birth certificate to cross.

Same as said above.

Note from spouse. Has to indicate they are aware of trip and grant permission. Include phone number(s).

ID - The BC needs to be an original. They do not like copies.

Both kids have passports and are 10 and 13. Shouldn't be an issue if the border guard asks them questions.

Will get a letter just in case.
