Location: SWEDEN | Im about to do my first muskie trip to Lakeofwoods and trying tp prepare as much as possible .
I have plenty of baits for pike but then the hook size often around 2/0 & if i use bigger hooks the bait dosent work .
I have some lures from Headbanger that i have seen several videos on were they get muskie , the hooks on headbanger are small . I think its 1/0 in front and a size 1 in the back .
How small hooks is OK to use on muskie , what i have heard is that you need to have 4/0 or bigger ???

| If you feel confident catching a 45" pike, on it, its no different than a 45" inch muskie.
If you know the limitations of the gear you use, everything should be fine. |

| I switch out most of my hooks with either Gamakutsu or preferable Owner trebles. I use a range from 1/0 to 4/0. No problems for musky or pike. Caught hammer handles on 4/0's and 40" inchers on 1/0.
BTW many of Owners hooks I use as replacements are bigger than hooks I replace. I.E.: A 8" DepthRaider comes with VMC's 5/0 trebles, but I use Owner 3/0 as replacements and they are ~ the same size and much more sturdy.
Point here is the size of the hook varies widely between vendors (Eagle Claw, VMC, Owner, Gamakatsu, Mustad, etc....) and even between the type of hook from the same vendor.  |

| Owner hooks are the way to go. They are super strong and the sharpest hooks I've ever used. I wish they made bigger trebles than I have been able to find, the cutting points are my favorite. |

Location: St. Lawrence River | I like mustads. I can sharpen them so ridiculously sharp. I think 6/0 on my bucktails. And same on mag dawgs. |

| what kind of file do you use for your 3551?i use a flat one and they turn just ok. |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | I personally prefer to use a chain saw type (looks like two rat tail files bound together) for a single pass on all four surfaces followed by a flat file for a single pass on the upper, lower, and two sides of the hook point. You'll find that you get a really superb point without using any pressure on the files. |

| yeah i think i'll need to try these one,because the 3551don't turn as sharp as i would like without rat tails.i hate when hooks are not sharp enough right out of the box.that's why i use 3551 only for 8/0,owner 3/0 are as wide as a 7/0 3551 mustad so i don't have to waist my times at playing with the files
