I have been using suckers year round (as long as I can find them) for a while. The trick to sucker fishing during non-cold water periods is to keep them alive while in the bait well and while fishing them. Warm water is a killer to suckers.

You must keep the bait well circulating and I find that fishing them in deep water keepes them alive alot longer. I also find that the smaller suckers keep better in warmer water than larger ones.

Good luck

75 degree water temps and under you should be ok....as long as you're using strong suckers, they should do ok in the water and in the well. The less you jab them with hooks, the longer they live. I am the master sucker rigger, and will play with sucker lines all day, but I cant seem to get any fish on them. IM me, I will explain the secrets of the "Ralphie Rig" to you, very good way of settin the meat.
