The bite has been not to bad, most of the fish have been caught casting still with the odd one caught trolling. The overall size has not been what I would great most fish averaging around the 40" mark with some big northern 41" and 40" last time out. Water temps still in the 50' ,hoping with the cooler temps at nite this will drop it to the mid 40's and make the big ones get going, but in time.

Hey D'arcy,

You responded to a post of mine on another board and I never got a chance to reply....spending all my time on the road. Sorry about that!

This will be my 4th year straight in your neck of the "woods" during late Oct - early Nov. I fish with someone I think you know. I won't say his name in public but I bet you know the guy that just got married and bought a house in town. Great guy, I met him on my honeymoon, of all places. We spent a guide day musky fishing and he invited me up in the fall - which I've been taking him up on every year since.

Anyway, he was out the other day and didn't do much - other than a few nice pike. He said there are just hordes of baitfish up to the primary break already. In fact, he thought there was too much bait around our spots!

I see on the weather channel it's been pretty chilly up there the past few days. I hope the bottom is dropping out of the water temperature!

Any hot baits / colors so far? I already have about everything in every color but I always pick up a few new things to try. I have to say though, that it's pretty hard to beat those natural color Jakes when the baitfish spawn is happening.

Well, enough screwing off at work. You have a great fall and good luck. Maybe we'll see you on the water in a couple of weeks. 30th thru the 5th.

Hey Mike

I think you are planning your trip at the peak period this year and you will be fishing around the full moon phase.
I'm fishing out of Kenora this weekend but will be fishing some of my summer area.I'll leave a message when I get back as to results.

My hot colors for trolling are glitter perch, tenn shad, glitter walleye, superman colors, which you can tell I like trolling jakes. My bait of choice for casting has been a blaze orange suick with black spots(10') its been hot.
Take it easy and maybe we will see you out there during your trip.

Well got in a day and a half this weekend(boat problems ended sunday's fish early) on some new area for myself on LOTW and was fairly successful. We boated 4 fish sat. the biggest being a healthy 41" and sunday seen three fish but no bites. All fish where caught casting (Suicks,Squirks)but heard from others that sunday the trolling bite had started to get better (snowed then). The water temps are mid 40's so should bring up those bigger fish, chopping at the bite to get out again here in the next few days.

Hi D'arcy,

Looks like I've been living right because the weatherman is definitely telling me what I want to hear about the next few days weather. Mid 40's and high pressure - You were right - this looks to be the week!

If I can just get through today at work......:)

Pull up and say Hi if you see a 16' Blue Lund out there in the next few days.

I'll let you know how we did when I get back.

Good luck and thanks for the reports.

D'arcy,

Well, I said I'd let you know how we did. In a nutshell, we absolutely slaughtered 'em!!!!!!!!! It was the best week either of us has ever had - for both size and numbers. The high points in 4 1/2 days are (Oct 31 - Nov 5)

65 Pike over 35" (biggest = 39" X 20)
14 Muskies (biggest = 44 x 24, 46.5 x 23, 48.5 x 23)
4 big lakers (12 lbs plus)

We trolled the primary break almost steady for the first 2 days and caught lots of big pike and a few low 40" muskies. On the 3rd day, we got to talking about that Pearson book "Muskies on the Shield". In the section about fishing "walls" I remembered him saying that good ones were hard to find.....but cast to them. Boy did that work!!! We caught the 2 biggest fish within about 45 minutes of one another on the 4th day and we caught 8 muskies in the last 2 days doing this. We were ripping 10" Jakes like a jerk bait.

The only problem, if you can call it that, was that the muskie feeding window seemed to be really short - the pike seemed to eat all day. We caught almost all of our muskies between about 8:00 a.m. and about 10:30 a.m..

Anyway, I better get back to work - I'll try to scan a couple of pictures to show you.

By the way, all good strong releases on the muskies - they're all waiting for me next year!!!!!!!1

Mike

P.S. I knew I recognized your name - you were the guy that took the picture for my friend of his 55 incher this summer. Nice one huh?

You guys have a helluva playground up there!

Hey Mike

Sounds like you had a great time, I was talking to another friend who had great success that week also,as for myself got out this weekend for a few hours each day , trolling was not great(cold front) caught two fish trolling one small muskie, and a good northern, and caught one musky (42") jigging bulldawgs on a reef. But shouldn't complain being able to fish this late in the season is a blessing.

Take it easy

D'arcy,

Of all the baits I brought with me this year, the one I wanted and didn't have was a Bulldawg. I said in my earlier message that the feeding window seemed to be short. After that window, we would see huge, deep (25'-30') hooks right adjacent to spots that held shallow muskies only hours or minutes before. I tried to count down a big tandem spinnerbait to them but got hung on the bottom every time I tried it.

Do the Bulldawgs get hung up easily? Do you count it down and then rip it up fast? How much success have you had with them?

Hey Mike

We only fished two spots and caught the one within 5 mins of fishing our only problem was that there was 4 of us in the boat and only 2 baits. The Bulldawgs do get hung easy but hey any bait gets hung up there when close to rock, have a small fortune in baits down there, plan on doing some dives in the spring to reclaim some baits.WE basically dragged the baits across a reef jigging them a little waiting for tap then set the hook. Have not caught alot of muskies with them only a couple but have not used the bait a whole lot.
