Has anyone replaced their mechanical steering system?

I've only barely researched it, but it looks to me like I have the planetary gear style helm with dual-cable steering. I don't know exactly what failed but I have no control of the motor's turning except occasionally I can get it to "catch" and steer. It's like the planet gears are stripped OR the cable is wrapped up goofy in the helm and not tracking like it's supposed to.

Seems like worst case would be I have to replace the whole system. I'm not all that mechanical and don't have a ton of tools, but naive enough to try a lot of stuff on my own. That said, if it's more than a 1-afternoon job for a novice like me, I'm bringing it in.

What do you think?

I'm waiting on a call back from the marine mechanic. No idea what they will charge.

Thanks

i installed all new controls and steering cables this year replacing my '94 system to new matching up to a 2012 re-power. mine had gotten sloppy and just felt like it was going to be a problem. so glad i did it ... can't remember what i paid to do it but was told to get the premium cables (there's a difference in what you select) ... and did so by specification from a trusted powersports business owner up here in MQA. not something i would have approached myself. let me know if you want me to dig up any of the receipts etc...

It really depends on if the motor needs to be removed to replace the cables and how hard it is to run the cables through the boat. You may also look at upgrading to hydraulic steering at this time.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was quoted a reasonable price from one of the local marine shops, $200 - 400, so if it comes in at that range I'll be happy. AND they said I'd have it back by the weekend. They agreed that it was probably something in the helm stripped out, and replacing just that isn't a huge deal. I assume they can do it at least 3 times faster than me so that's worth the money in my estimation.

i replaced a dual cable rack steering +cables myself last spring, i am prretty handy and do all repairs ,still a good job ! passing the cables if by yourself , i do reseach a lot before doing it if not familiar with that job and what i read about rack steering (not same as you i guess) that better to change cables too ,in my case the helm does not fit the new cables so no choice but if your cables are hard to move that could be part of the problem ! the hydrolic system costs 3 times the new cable helm kit.
