This is my first year of muskie fishing (as I have stated often on this thread). If you could spend a full week in the pursuit of muskies, where and when would you go. I am in the very early planning stages for my vacation next year. My wife will be retiring from the Air Force next summer and she wants to (get this....) spend a full week at a lake fishing and looking for a summer hang-out (possible purchase some property). Damn I picked a good one, am I lucky or what!!!!. I have experience at Cass and Vermillion. Having made one trip to each lake (vermillion Jun 02 and Cass June 03). I am considering Vermillion in August since I have to plan arounds the kids school. All suggestions are welcome. I've come back skunked the last two years (June hasn't cooperated much with me), I don't want it to happen again.

Chief.

AFC,

If you don't want to get skunked again you'd better pursue another species of fish. I've been at this going on 4 years and have only caught 4 (none over 30")

Honestly though, Vermilion gets better later in the season. I've been going there in late July for the last 4 years and even though we've seen some real hawgs we've never hooked up. Now, I don't pretend to be God's gift to musky fishing, but Vermilion will reward you handsomely someday if you stay at it. I can't think of any other lake I'd rather spend my family vacation on. Hook up with a guide. It's money well spent. Send me a note if want some recomendations.

Pretty tough to beat Eagle River or the Minocqua areas of Wisconsin....

Vermilion would be a great choice, but I would go early in August, or wait another year. Early September is the Simply Fishing Muskie Classic ($100,000 1st place) That lake is going to get pounded during August. Everyone looking for their patterns and spots.

Other great August locations; Mille Lacs (also holds 40"+ Pike) Leech, Cass and always LOTW. I am a Minnesota guy, so I can't help you much on those Wisconsin lakes.

Good Luck!
