I love this bait but ain't sold on the hooks. I was a little skeptical when I first saw them and sure enuff a mid 30's striaghted one of the hooks on a boatside smash, and I use a very light drag. Anyone try gettin rid of the middle hook and adding some strong 3/0 to the front and back. I'm curious to hear what others think on this. am I too anal on this>?

I like the hook-up using the lighter wire hooks on cranks, especially if the lure is a bulky one. I found over the years that a thinner wire hook pins up better, and holds better, too. Just have to be careful not to let the fish 'twist' at the boat if one can help it, that will cause a problem for sure.

I upsized mine to the next size up in the same wide gap. With the bigger hooks it sinks slightly instead of rising slowly. Haven't had any strikes yet, but it's had a few lookers.

I already changed the hooks to Eagle Claw 2/0 774's as of this July. We tried almost all of the hooks that are available. The 774's won in a unanimous decision... I agree with Steves thoughts but I am not sure the risk vs. reward is there to use the thinner wire hooks.

Speaking of hooks. I have around 2000 Mustad Round Bend 2/0 extra heavys for sale. I will sell them cheap... 1-800-783-0718.

ps. Eric from Smokeys had a good suggestion for hooks the other day. WAY too pricey to buy in bulk so they wont be a standard... I cant remember for the life of me what the brand name was??? maybe he will see this and post??

I took off the middle hook and put on VMC hooks. The thing still dances sweet and hangs. I love that bait.

I usually take off my middle hooks. They seem a bit overkill on most baits.

I'm glad to hear they switched hooks. The first fish I caught on one bent it pretty good. It was a dink too.

I switched mine out with 3/0 X-heavy VMC's, and it still catches fish. I would highly suggest anyone still using the thin hooks to switch to a heavier hook.

Hey Muskie Bum, I agree with Steve Worrall on this I like the lighter wire hooks, they seem to hook up better.

However you do run the risk of having them straightened if your not quick with the freespool. I freespool most of my fish at the side of the boat so they don't bend the hooks.

I have DDD's with all different kinds of hooks on them and the action stays pretty consistent along with the hang time. Bottom line is the light wire will bend and changing them won't hurt a thing. Good luck and God bless.
