I have caught my share of fish on surface baits and still wonder one thing. Do you have more luck keeping your bait on the surface doing a figure eight on the follow or do you plunge the lure down under the surface and figure 8. I usualy plunge it down. I have a friend just walks around the boat keeping it on top and does ok. What do you think???????

Thanks will check when I get back from pewaukee. Have to go pack my long johns and boots. God I hate winter!!!!!!!!!

Keep it on top,,, very slight turns,,, and walk it around the boat.

Trust me.. It works.

If it is a prop bait, like a Slammer Thunderhead, or Topraider, I figure 8 it below the surface, if it is a Hog wobbler or creeper I stay on the surface.

I keep it on top. An angle change is all that is needed to get the bait back into their sight zone... and submersing the lure eliminates the sound... a key element with topwaters.

I believe the few fish eating a deep figure eight of a topwater simply ate it because they could see it.... above or below the water.

I believe those fish pushing a wake on a tailbait and their nose right on the back end of the lure are so tuned into the vibration with their lateral lines that they position themselves TOO close to the lure... putting it in their blind spot. Speed up... or direction change puts it where they can see it. Sinking the bait may work... but you've then lost your "signal".

Cool Question Pfieffer!!!

hi. i belive its best to keep baits like the jackpot - creeper- hawgwobbler - wolloy pog - up on the surface. but i think baits like the tally wacker-topraider-thunderhead-teasertails. these you can plunge i find i have better luck like this as farr as the one comment that was posted that plungeing takes away the sound i have to disagree on that the lure will still put out vibrations. and just the same as if it where on top these vibrations all are sensed by the latteral line on the fish in fact i belive that the change in sound do to this can trigger a stike more than hurt you. just my pennys worth.
goodluck.

Hi all,
The largest fish I ever hooked on a figure eight hit a topraider and
it was under water.
It may have been a freak because I haven't had one hit it since but I keep on trying it. []

I hate to state the obvious again but if you have ever seen bait fish being chased by bigger fish....Where do the bait fish go?.. More often than not they dart and often break the surface....remember seeing that? I take it deep ,eradic, and usually bring it up slapping the water, and not worry about 'blind spots', or trucking around the boat(which tends to be too much movement above the fish). When in doubt why not try to mimmick nature????

Have any of you tried the Big L? Changing 90° when you reach the boat and then pulling it along the boat?
