| Today i lost my pb considerably bigger than my previous 46". I caught a 40 second cast at the boat launch first decent musky of this year (I fish a river system), then had the super tanker slam my blue fox super bou on a pass of the bay, right when the fish was about to be netted she did a gator roll then dove and the line snapped "80lbs spiderwire with 130lbs fluro leader" 30 seconds of shock went by and she jumped and threw the bait which made me feel alot better, but has this happened to any of you? |

Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | Use 80lb Cortland Masterbraid or 80lb Suffix 832 and this will not happen. I had lots of baits break off on Spiderwire Stealth and PP and have never trusted those lines again. |

| i am running a fantasista beast i just bought 2 weeks ago checked the guides and they are smooth as silk, plus I just cut off 7ft of line because of line fraying and the thought of this happening. |

Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Cortland master braid. You can't hurt that line. Multiple hard backlashes without the lure breaking off magnum bulldawg too. (not to mention all I have to do to get the backlash out is pull the line and it comes right out) also got snagged in some rip rap with a crank bait, wrapped the line around a cleat on the boat and put it in gear, broke off the split ring and got my crank back. Only 80lb line too. |

| Ouch! That makes for a rough day. Had my wife hit a big fish with the hoop of the net and lost the fish a few years ago.... would have been close to a 50 and my PB |

At the boat is where a fish can really put alot of pressure on the equipment and a locked drag or not in freespool with your thumb on it is asking for something to happen. What sucks even worse, seen it happen to a buddy of mine is when that big fish jumps several times and isn't throwing the lure.

Was the drag locked down at the boat? At the boat is where a fish can really put alot of pressure on the equipment and a locked drag or not in freespool with your thumb on it is asking for something to happen. What sucks even worse, seen it happen to a buddy of mine is when that big fish jumps several times and isn't throwing the lure.
great piece of information here...My bro and I were just talking about this when a big girl hits in the 8 u better be ready like stated that drag locked and you not paying attention gonna end bad either broken equipment or if it holds up might find yourself in the lake...speaking of which anyone went in on a wicked figure 8 strike?? |

| Another good tip would be use a que-tip with cotton to feel around inside the eyes, if any resistance or snagging happens there's the issue, small cracks can happen and this is the only way to know for sure. Keep at it and keep learning and this will all be a thing of the past. |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | It's your line (frayed, old or just low quality), your knot (failure) or you have a bad guide in the rod that affected either of the first two. 80lb line should not, dare I say will not, break just from a 20lb muskie thrashing. Not to fight, but you don't HAVE to go with 100lb line. I've never used it and have probably caught as many muskies on 50lb (and a bunch on 27-30lb mono) as I have on the 80lb I use for heavier baits. |

Location: Ames, Iowa | Lots of factors here. Did the line break at the knot? Maybe you need to rethink your knot. Did you reverse your line at the start of the season? Did you back off the drag after the hookup? I never fail to do this. The comment about the big dog on a short leash is a great note. I'm always looking at my line as I fish, and I'd notice any fraying. Spiderwire frays like a beast, and has no business being used in the muskie game. I use #80 Power Pro. |

| Get old nylons and cut a strip off. Go through each one of your guides. This is probably your problem. A small cut in your guides will break any line under load |

| you release the spool at the boat? This makes sense. I landed a 36" by myself this weekend on an 8'6" rod. I really could have used some extra line and less resistance. The fish hit on the figure 8 and was not tired out. I thought about loosening the drag however, my two reels adjust the drag in different directions and didn't want to mess up. |

we never caught it, the fish hit twice. but yes it was an estimation. the fish that snapped off was in the exact same location that this happened too and i caught a fish prior 10 mins to this happening and did not see any fray or kinks in the line |

That said, I have a rod that eats line for no apparent reason. I am constantly cutting off 3-4 feet after a day of fishing. It's not the line - I use Cortland Maserbraid on all my setups and this is the only one that goes through line like that.
What others have said is noteworthy as well. Heavy Rod, drag locked down, good sized fish makes a run with a few feet of line out, somethings gonna give. For me it was a lot of straightened hooks and lost fish before I finally realized that the drag exists for a reason. So do thumbs. Now I keep all my drags tight to where a decent (45" - 48") fish will take some line. This has greatly cut down on the number of fish that "got off" at my feet. |

Location: Jane Lew, WV | My take, which is slightly apparent. "How close is the drag to being locked all the way down for those 45-48"ers? It is hard to adjust the drag for a fish of that size class without first feeling a fish of that size."

| If I pull on my drag I can't get it to come out unless I use my thumb to roll the spool the same direction. I do not palm my reel and my thumb drops on the spool for a hookset. Same scenario for bass when using mono or floro that stuff stretches so much it takes being locked down when there is 30' of line out but would explode if I used more drag. |

Yeah I'd do this. 80lb braid is tough to break unless something is cutting it like the guides or casting over rocks repeatedly. |

| I use spiderwire stealth in 80 & 100 lb since it hit the market after Berkley whiplash was done. I've never had a break-off fighting a fish, and have landed many a big girl on it. not to mention have straightened out hooks pulling snags free. I don't think the line is the issue here, it's probably a cracked eyelet, poorly tied knot, or some really bad luck when a fish rolls in line and cut's it on it's own. which even so, is still a rarity given I've not ever seen that happen.
check your equipment boys n girls, it'll save you lots of heartache and $ in the long run.  |

| I would be willing to bet that most of us have lost one - more that's bigger than the biggest one we've caught, I have. I'm happy with the ones I've caught and glad (but somewhat melancholy) for the ones I've at least had a chance at. |
