Location: Northern Illinois | Looking for a better prop for a hole shot with muskie equipment and 2 people on board. I'm currently running a Mercury Marine Tempest Plus 23P. flat out rpm range is around 4400 to 4600. Biggest issue I have right now is the lack of whole shot it takes full throttle and alot of time to get on plane. top end is great low to mid 50's. not looking for alot of speed would rather have more hole shot with people and equipment on board. Thanks |

Location: Twin Cities, MN | Pretty sure your 135's RPM limit is 5600.
That being said, I run a 19 Pitch high five on my 617 with a 150 Optimax which pops it right up on plane and gives me very good speed and control at all levels and conditions.
I am no prop expert, but I think you are over propped.
My original prop was a 19 pitch Tempest Pro. I am thinking you need to be going down to get propped correctly and get your hole shot back. Possibly even down to a 17 depending on what prop you are looking at.
Have you tried the Merc Prop Selector ?
Good Luck

| Not a prop expert either but sounds like too much prop. I have a 681VS with a 115 Honda and run a 15P and 17P. Not much of a difference between them to be honest. Maybe 1mph top end. I'd try a 17-19P |

| Probably comparing apples to oranges with the 4 stroke 115 vs the 2 stroke 135 though... |

Location: Northern Illinois | No I haven't tried the prop selector tool. I will take a look at that right now. I was thinking the boat was over propped. Just bought the boat in may. I will look into a 19P prop setup. |

| In '98 when I bought my 681vs i'm pretty sure it came with a 23 pitch high 5. I bought it from Frankies so I don't know if they put that prop on or if it came that way from Ranger. That boat also had a Mariner 135hp OptiMax. |

Location: In the slop! | I bought my 681 new in 2001 with 135 optimax. It came from Ranger with a 23" Tempest plus. The prop has always worked well for me. With a light load it's a rocket but even loaded with two people and everything for a week on an island it still gets on plain pretty good.
Tried a 22" trophy one time, did not like it at all, the rpms went over 6000 and speed went down. If I had access to a 22" raker I would try it but wouldn't go down to 19".
The best thing you can do with props is try them somehow, find a marina that will loan you one or two. Pretty expensive to keep buying them until you find the right one.

| Try a lower pitch for sure. Lots of guys like four blade props (like the trophy) but obviously not everyone does. I agree with the advice that you can only know for sure by trying lots of props, but definitely confirm your top RPMs for the engine and get a prop that puts you at that mark with a light load in the boat (one person with little or no gear). Beyond that it's your personal preference for hole shot, mid-range economy, and top speed. I have a 681 with an Etec and Mark Croxton (google him) was awesome. Call him up, spend 5 minutes on the phone, and he'll send you what you need without messing around (expect $500 give or take for a new stainless prop). |

Location: Maple Grove | I run a 23P high five on my 681vs with 135 Opti. Top end for me with a medium load is about 51. Hole shot is good. Can't back up real well with this prop though. |

| You could send a your prop to a prop shop to add more cup to come out the the hole better. Would be the cheapest option. Look up Mark on bassboatcentral.com |

Location: Northern Illinois | I repositioned my just encase to the front of the boat and my hole shot actually got alot better. Full fuel tank also weighs down the front which helps. Thanks for all the ideas guys much appreciated.
