Location: Northern Illinois | Hi all,
Just bought a new to me Ranger 681vs with a 2001 mercury optimax 135. Engine has 205 hrs on it, I've changed the water/ fuel separator filter. new air filter, lower unit oil new water pump w/ impeller. Motor runs great at and above 1500 rpm, It runs kind of rough when idling in no wake zones and runs rough when in neutral and occasionally cutting out in neutral. The last owner only used it 3 times in 4 years so it sat alot and it had old gas in it about 20 gallons. he said he topped it off before we went for a test run before purchase. I'm wondering if bad gas would cause this, I ran 15 gallons through it with no change. I just added 15 gallons of fuel and some mercury quickleen additive. Any suggestions on what to check next? maybe plugs? or vacuum / intake leak? just looking for some ideas. |

Location: Hayward, WI | New plugs would be a good thing to try. Make sure you start them by hand, they can cross thread easily. |

| Take a look on the insides of the fuel lines, it is possible even with ethenal resistant fuel lines they are deteriorating I'd wanna look at least. |

Location: Hayward, WI | Also make sure that the motor is running at proper temp at idle. If thermostat is stuck open or something else is preventing it from running the proper temp they can run rough at low speeds. |

| Them plugs needed changed make sure you get exact same Plug number the optimax is very sensitive that plug off 1 number or letter you will have problems and make sure gap on point I think this will clear up your problem you running premium fuel and putting stabile in it to take out ethanol also very important |

Location: Northern Illinois | Yes I will be putting new plugs in. I have correct part number stated above. Next question is what should I gap them to? Also would it be a good idea to buy a overhaul kit for the fuel pump and rebuild it? Or is there a something that I can clean out in the fuel pump make sure that it is clean and not gummed up. I replaced the fuel filter already. |
