Ok I am going to Canada in August and this year we have 2 boats going that absolutely have to be able to communicate with each other. We could be upwards of 30 miles or more apart. What brand and model of radio do I need to make this happen? I did a search for long distance radios and I am convinced that there are more models of radios than musky lures.........I don't want to buy something that ends up working 2 miles out and then nothing. I always appreciate the experience and knowledge on this site and thanks in advance for any help.

All we use are Motorola RMU2080D. Buy the mic for it. Helps for hands free. Also has a NOAA channel on it. (Should get it in Canada?). 250-300 a whack. Don't drop them in the drink!

What kind of range are you getting out of your motorolas? The more i have been reading about walkies the more I am thinking the distance is going to be a real problem in the real world.

You are not going to get that kind of range with walkie talkies. Most likely 2-3 miles. I use them in the combine to talk to the cart and truck drivers every fall. Sometimes I can talk to the trucks when they're 5-6 miles out but that's rare.

Take 2 cups and put a small hole in the bottom of each. Then get 30 miles of string and take one end of the string and put it through the bottom of the first cup and tie a knot so it won't come out, then take the other end of the string and repeat with the other cup. And there you go, the most reliable means of communication mankind has ever seen. Just make sure the string doesn't get caught in the prop.

Radios are line of sight antenna to antenna so on clear open water with a high enough antenna maybe with obstructions no. It may be possible to rent a couple of satelite phones otherwise climb a tall pine at the top of a hill face west and cross your fingers.
Edit: why 30 miles apart must be lots of fish in the waters between you.

Important addition to the above is that the string needs to be taut.. not tight or the knot will pull thru the bottom of the other cup, otherwise you won't be able to hear anything.
