We're still using smaller baits and bucktails but the bite has been tough. Anyone upsizing yet? I'm going to tie on some 10's today and see if it works.

I caught 2, and lost 2 yesterday fishing double 10's. Definitely saw a difference in fish attitude when I upsized

I've caught all my fish so far this year on 12" baits and bigger. But trolling is cheating according to some.

Got 3 fish to eat junior CGs opening week. Water temp was mid 60s in the spot though.

7 so far. Lost a few fishing solo that would have made it topside if I had a net man. Give me a shout and I'll fill you in.

Got 3 on double 8's last week and 2 on 8 inch jakes. Had one bite a double 10 but that was it. Water was 68-70 up here in Ontario. Probably go up to bigger baits in a few weeks myself

Opening day I was using big baits. If anything I tend to downsize throughout the season until turnover when I go back up.

Propster, I was simply asking for more data... it helps put things in perspective. simply stating he caught 7 in 9 days using baits over 12" does what to help the viewers on here without data to show how many hours it took?? I know an angler in MN that put 5 in the boat so far in 19 hrs on the water all using baits UNDER 12"...so did Pat put in 20 hrs? 40, ? 60? it would show what might be a better choice to maximize your time on the water. I try to help others maximize their time, when I give reports or advice I have the #s to back it up. Sorry, but simply catching muskies even 7 in a week doesn't make someone a good angler , (and I'm not implying Pat is or isn't, don't know him) ...there is much more to it than that... I don't doubt he caught 7, but it would be helpful for the poster or other viewers of the thread to know a bit more... my friend put a fish in the net in under 4 hrs on the water using baits under 12".. maybe Pat put in 60 hrs.. as any seasoned musky angler knows, any bait, any size, can and work at any time but the best try to put the most in the boat with the time they have... take it or leave it telling someone they put 7 in the boat and just that really doesn't help someone improve as an angler.... why even post it if you're going to be vague and not answer simple questions beyond it? If you have been on here long enough you know I'm pretty direct, don't mince words, and give pretty solid advice from 24 years chasing these fish. take it or leave it. my 2 cents.

Summer School; I'm from Riverton, Wyoming and have chased a few purebreds in Nebraska. All my action there has been on lures 7" or less. Right now I'm concentrating on tigers (which I almost always fish with smaller baits). I'm surprised to see another Wyoming angler on the site. Best of luck.

The reason I didn't give any specific information was because the OP didn't ask for it in the first place. He simply asked if larger baits were catching fish and I affirmed they are indeed. I understand you were looking for my information and there is nothing wrong with that but the way you directed your question made it sound as if you were skeptical in the first place, so I responded in a way that answered your question. Again, the reason I posted was to show the original poster that larger baits are currently working, that's what he asked in the first place. Because I "failed" to provide the remaining information, in your opinion, over an open internet forum is the way I post information. If you want specific information then send me a PM but there are still things I'm not willing to share that have taken years to learn and gifting those trades away is not something I take lightly. You seem to be interested in stats, I'm not. I don't care how many fish I catch at the end of the year, or how long it took me to do so, or what the moon phase was during certain events. Not saying the guys who pay close attention to these things are wrong, but I have a limited amount of time I get to spend on the water every year and I just enjoy being out there.

sorry, Yes I can see how you took it... any size baits work when they are in the water a lot...you don't want to catch more fish for your limited time ? ok then... have a good season.

EXACTLY his point... So you can keep score. Heaven forbid someone is catching more fish than you! As a (self proclaimed) wise man once told me on this site, go kick a tree.

wasn't that at all. lots of guys catch more than me, heck I could have been blanked last week if I was in MN.. there are those that want to improve and those that are just happy with avg results.. knowing the data will help if you are in the 1st group. why not know the rest of the story? it would be helpful for me if I wanted to go fish MN to know what the best choice to put the most fish in the boat for the week was wouldn't it? I personally don't enjoy getting skunked or lack luster results.. I find it hard to believe anyone that fishes muskies doesn't want to improve their catch rate and is "just happy" w their results... sounds counter productive. but whatever...
it's no wonder the best anglers in the sport don't come on here to offer advice or help.
in any case, use big baits, use little baits, both will catch fish at any time of the season, let the fish tell you what they want. as always.

This is an interesting topic. I tend to agree w/ BNelson. It's not so much about keeping 'score', it's about (for me, anyway) compiling data and analyzing repeatable scenarios (weather, moon, lures, wind, etc.) that may help me put fish in the boat more consistently (improve). And I think hours per fish is a HUGE data point. Let's say I boated three fish last week. Was I fishing for a couple hours after work a couple nights? Or was I on PTO for the entire week, spending 10+ hours on the water multiple days? There is a MASSIVE difference in those two results.

Either way, sounds you have had a great season thus far - regardless of time on the water.

Hey Nelson...I have 5 fish in the boat in my last 9 hours on the water in MN...what do I win?? Bahaha!

I do agree with your point about hours per fish though...they tell the true story. And how many anglers...like when we got back from LOTW and the one guy last year was talking about all these fish caught in a week...then come to find out it was multiple boats...the results ended up being more average once the details were in place.

Info is great and can help our fellow anglers...but I think its important to be able to quantify the info too. As was previously mentioned.

Per usual - the weekly/monthly/yearly forum peeing contest lol.

I can see where Nelson is coming from, the dude just wanted some relatively harmless information and got a snarky retort. Could he have softened his question approach? Definitely lol. However, if the other guy feels like years of experience are too valuable to impart on others then that's his prerogative and we cant change it. At the end of the day most everyone has conflicting philosophies anyway so what works for this guy today won't work for the next person because of a multitude of factors.

But the bottom line is this ... we joined this forum to exchange information and empower our fellow musky hunters. TO BECOME BETTER ANGLERS. No one is asking for the secret spot here!! SO if you are just too cool for information sharing .. as stated before .. go kick a tree lol.

My $.02... I've put in a ton of time researching this forum for tips/tricks and all the information I can get. That way I'm not making a thread every minute asking stupid questions. It's always nice to hear what works and what does not. I'm not looking for GPS coordinates of your favorite spot. If you don't want to discuss your catch on a discussion forum, then I'm not sure what help it is to post that you caught fish.

Nice! We just moved to Cheyenne from Colorado.

Any-who- Tried double 10s and no luck, had another follow on a shallow raider on the ladies pole. She's putting me to shame atm.
