Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying 2 new combos this year. I am moving back home in a few weeks and would like to get new gear. The rods will be for throwing everything from bucktails, jakes, gmas, bulldawgs, spinnerbaits suick etc. Can you guys recommend some options. I'd like 2 set ups, 1 for bucktails and the other for cranks gliders bulldawgs. I'm not sure if I should go with heavy or xheavy and why. I think for reels I'm going to pick up 2 Calcutta 400 but not sure on the reel ratios I should be looking at. My spending limit is 800 ish. Thanks for the suggestions.

There are literally dozens of threads onsite covering this, use the search function on the Tackle and equipment board for a couple hours of reading!

I have read probably 100 posts on the subject. I am mostly caught up with reels and the ratios for certain presentations. I'm not sure which reels would be best suited. I'd like a setup for lighter blades and jerks on an 8'6 mh and a setup a little heavier. I bought a slingblade for throwing med bucktails and reg or smaller dawgs. The reels I'm looking at are the tranx pg and hg, as well as the toro 60 and beast. I just don't want to drop 500 on a reel without some input if I can get any.

With a Tackle Industries XH and XXH you can throw everything from 2oz to 16oz. Amazing rods, amazing warranty, amazing customer service. If you have a sling blade already, get a TI XXH as your second rod. You'll love it. For reels, love the toro s 60 for big blades, topwaters, and cranks. Check out the beast 60 high speed for rubber, jerkbaits, etc. Both great reels.

The slingblade is a very versatile blank, possibly the most versatile in the st croix line up. The big nasty is also similar but you lose a little on the smaller end of the bait spectrum and gain a lot for big blades and rubber.

The tranx 500 are great reels but many would consider a bit too big. But they are both able to do things that no other reel can do for long periods of time. I would look at the beast or tranx 400 for the sling blade. if you decide you want to throw more big rubber and big blades get a big a big nasty or big dawg to compliment it. If you want to throw lighter stuff maybe look at their long ranger. A tranx 500 hg would be great on the big nasty or a 400 on the long ranger would be nice as well.

Ok so I'm thinking the toro 60 or reg beast for the sling blade and then the rod for rubber, jerks and big blades/ double 10s go with a beast hs or tranx hg. I just held the tranx and it feels absolutely massive for my hands to be throwing bucktails, jerks, and rubbers comfortably all day. Is this something that I can get used to. I also get a nice discount from abu and can save a lot going that route. I'm mostly concerned with what reel for big blades and rubber.

Yes. I would even say your good down to about 1.5oz baits with the XH... i find myself using my XH/XXH TI sticks all the time. I hardly even touch my St Croixs.. they are fantastic rods.

The S60 pulls in a double 10 like nothing, and it works for big rubber too. Not the best reel for rubber, but it works just fine. The beast 60HS is awesome for rubber, but I wouldn't use it for 10's. I burn 8's with mine and it's awesome for that, but at 34IPT it's not a great 10's reel in my opinion. A toro s60 is the one of the best all purpose reels you can buy.
