| I love my saltist 30 the original grey one,,caught a fair number of fish on it,,it does have a recurring problem,,,the freespool lever you push forward,,binds or jams or sometimes has periods where it won't go forward you have to really slam it sometimes with your palm,,had the spring replaced couple times by couple different reel guys including some of the ones known to this site.
I'm wondering if any of you guys figured out a cure for this. | |

Not sure that answers this question...
Does anybody know what the change was with the black Saltist? I don't think they had the same lever and spring issues as the gray ones did. Was it just a different spring or a design change?

| I've had that happen a few times to my reels. Unless you know how to fix a popped spring yourself there really isn't much you can do other than send it to someone that knows how to fix it. A few things to make sure you are doing to help the problem:
1) make sure you stop the spool with your thumb when the lure hits the water.
2) Make sure not to accidently flip the lever up while the lure is in the air (I know this sounds stupid, but I've accidently hit the lever up before which caused all kinds of problems). This also applies to keeping good pressure on the spool in the middle of your cast to eliminate backlash. A hard backlash in the middle of a cast can cause spring problems as well.
3) grease and oil the reel before each season so it spins smoothly.
4) don't over tighten the drag...I set my drag pretty darn tight, but don't crank the drag lever as tight as possible.
I'm sure you know this stuff, just thought I should mention it.

Most of the older Saltist had bad Springs
I have HD ones, plus there is a trick to reinstall.
The Newer Black ones have auto engage over the older ones.
If only theses reels had a spool cast Brakes !!!!!
