Question for you guys? I recently purchased a new boat. Well an old boat but new to me boat. It came with a Lowrance Hook 7 at the console and a Hummingbird Helix 5 on the bow.

The Hummingbird works great, however if I leave it on and go to start my outboard motor the depth finder freezes and has to be unplugged and turned back on again. I cant hit the power off button to restart it for whatever the reason it needs to be unplugged. Also, if I shut the hummingbird off before I start the motor it will turn back on without needing to be unplugged. Both of my depth finders are hooked up to my starting battery.

I have researched this online a bit and the one thing I have found is this seems to be an issue with Hummingbirds in general at the bow. But I have not been able to find out how to fix it. Anyone else ever run into this issue and does anybody know how to fix it or what I should be doing to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Checking your power to the unit, how many volts are you getting the unit. Lowe voltage over the long span of the power wires can cause issues for electronics. Also, make sure the positive power cable has an in-line fuse holder with a 3 amp fuse to protect from power surges. Lastly, perform a software update for the Helix. A great resource for HB tech questions is https://www.facebook.com/groups/sideimaging/

What you have found about "this seems to be an issue with Hummingbirds in general at the bow" is not true. The location that the unit is mounted in the boat does not have a bearing on the performance. This is a rigging, power, connections or potentially a software concern.

Sounds good. I will check out the website listed. It does have an in line fuse holder and I have the voltage on my Lowrance set up on my display screen. I am getting over 12 volts. I dont have it set up on my hummingbird though.

25homes, excuse my ignorance but what do you mean did you check your grounds. I understand what a ground is but how should I be checking it. Are you asking if I have a ground, is it properly installed or what. I guess what specifically about the ground should I be checking.

The ground connection is what to check. Make sure your connections are nice and shiny clean for a good connection. I had that happen with mine and when I installed the wires to the battery I forgot to connect the ground wire. Lol

Humminbird customer service is always a good option as well, if the above options don't resolve the issue. 800-633-1468
