from what size on do you appreciate muskies? I've read some replies here and on other message boards that didn't sound too happy because their largest musky was only 40" or 45". To me those sound like repectable fish and I'd be happy to catch one of those any day. Maybe I didn't get the point of those replies but it seemed strange to me. Are muskies of 38-42" wide-spread?

Divani,

My biggest so far is 47". 3 times. I always considered a 48" to be a true trophy, but that goes back to hearing my Dad and Uncle talk about 4 footers. I am happy to catch any musky, regardless of it's length. However, the knee shake factor intensifies exponentially with the length of the fish. I have been honored to have had chances at a couple super-tankers in recent years, and I gotta say, just seeing/feeling a fish that big leaves a lasting impression. But scoff at a "smaller"(38-45), not me.

shep, I didn't mean scoffing at the size of those muskies but rather being a little disappointed when it's not larger than that size.

Nope, I'm not disappointed, either.

Divani, I notice that alot on the boards and with some clients. we catch a lot of muskies here in michigan( some days 12-18 fish) but some people get dissapointed if they don't get a 50" or better. I have seen a lot of fish caught and to tell you the truth some of the best fighters have been fish in the 40-48" range, they jump more, run more and really put on a show!! Don't get me wrong catching a 50+ is exciting, just seeing the size of them next to the boat will get your heart pumping, But my feeling is catching any muskie is a true experience to be enjoyed!! You got it, Cap'n Frank. One of the 47's I caught was on your lake. What an awesome fish. Hit a 10" believer, and by the time I got to the rod, she had about 200' of line out. As I grabbed the rod, I saw her tailwalking in the distance. She came out of the water several times, and when I got her to the net, we were both exhausted. Stayed with her after the release for what seemed like an hour, til she swam away. I'll see her out there, in my minds eye, for a long time. I was very excited to catch a fish like this. I will be back!

divani,

I caught a 34 today, and VERY much appreciated the fish. I have always said any day a muskie hits the net is a great day, no matter the size.

Something happened a few years back that suddenly made all muskies under 50" 'little', and I really don't like that trend.

I have spent WAY more time on the water than most anglers, and have a few big girls to my credit as a result, but that was THAT cast, the next cast is a whole new gig. If I blank, then that is the way it goes some days. If I get a big fish, I am happy, but not alot happier than just scoring a legal. I guess I have settled down some in my old age.

Sue's first was 38", and as it showed in her picture, to her that fish was a monster. I will have words with anyone who says otherwise!

Even the smallest of muskies is huge compared to most bass or walleye. Granted, I'd love to nab a 50" or better, but memories of every musky I've caught, large or small brings a smile to my face.

If someone can honestly say that they're disappointed in a 40" fish, then they are fishing for the wrong reasons.

I caught a fat 30"er today and I very much apreciated how it creamed my new h2os2t topwater creation. The man is a wood diva.

My smallest this year was 28" and largest was 40" and both, and all inbetween just thrilled me.  My hands still get the shakes a little with everyone I unhook.  Bigger is Better, but I'll take them as them come, they are all unique and a pleasure to do battle with!!

With 10 over 40" this year and the biggest at 46 1/2" I'm very much hoping to find the mistical 50. However I completly enjoy every single muskie I see, let alone boat. The most memorable ski of the year was about a week ago when my 8 yr old caught a 28 incher. His smile was bigger than the fish. I'll post it when I get it developed.
Take a kid fishing!
