People who fish Phantoms?

Just wondered how you guys like to fish your phantoms, I just picked up a crappie phantom this past weekend and thought that it worked great! I was using quick short twitches to make it walk the dog and then also randomly dark with a little harder jerk. the northern seemed to like it, but no follows. Just wondered how you lick to use it and if you do anything different?
thanks

Kly,
That's the way you work em man! Throw em a change up too, couple of quick snaps, followed by a pull or somethin like that. My old man uses them as a pull bait, works em just like a suick, and does just fine. Experiment with them. Remember each phantom has its own "personality"! Great baits!

Ditto w/ B420,

change up the presentation. Twitch-Twitch-Pause-Pull-Pause-Reel-Twitch-Twitch-Twitch, whatever...just experiment, vary and find what you (and more importantly - the fish) like.

I've got Phantoms that sink and some that float. You have to treat each one as an individual. The joys of wood baits.

They are cool baits and a nice price compared to other gliders out there. Have fun.

hi. i like to work them like a jackpot. but i will vary the retrive pace. also you can toss in a cuoplle upward jerks to get the bait to surface then go back to your downward snaps i find this will triger strikes when the lure comes up to the top they smash it. so try to get your up ward swing going to get the lure up and pick up your slak quick and get the rod tip down quick so you are ready to set the hooks fast. sounds like a lot of work but it is really very simple. also try to count it down and burn it in faster snaps and pops this has worked well for me on deep drops as well as mid lake structure.
goodluck.

That's what is nice about this bait. You can work it fast or slow, depending on how deep you want it to run. I have a few of the 6" models and they are a blast to work. If I have one critisizm about the bait, it is that it frequently hooks the front treble on the leader. I will try a solid wire leader which should solve the problem. Northerns do love that 6" model.

You can also straight retrieve this bait. It should troll good too.[:p]

I've got one of JONO's Phantoms in my boat [:0]

Gonna break it in for him this weekend []

Like they said find each ones personality, The one I'm trying seems to be fun to change up. Glides with the slightest twitch of the rod tip and moves like silk. I'll be buying a few for sure.

Jon,
I'll return it with teeth marks in it next week[]

I like to work it with a few snaps of the rod while straight cranking it back to the boat. Basically working it like a crankbait, but throwing the sporatic jerks or snaps of the rod give it an eratic action.
The beauty of this bait is its versatility. You can troll it, crank it, jerk it or combine some of the above.

PHANTOMS SUCK!!!!!! Don't bother throwing them! Your wasting your time [;)]

I'll do you a favor and take that Crappy (get it) lure off your hands so you don't feel obligated to use it[:halo:]

I was talking to Ben Remer the other day in the chat and he said he works his gliders in like the hook setting motion. If you saw that picture of the giant walleye I caught at carlton thats what I was doing w/ the phantom. I like a really unsteady rythm.. I have had more follows today and yeserday doing that. It wasn't w/ the phantom but the Undertaker I was giving a really erratic action and it was going up down side to side and just giving it a really uneven action it I got some followers and it got t-boned once, I saw it bite on it but Couldn't get hooks in it.

How esox69 eats his reese's...... oops I meant works his Phantom, proving there is no wrong way to work a Phantom.

I will attest to one thing that I guess (other than my stupidity) was the reason I missed 3 fish the other day on the Phantom 6". One huge one is I was more concerned about keeping the bait out above the weeds then pausing it for the fish to zone in for their strike (one of the fish hit the very top of my leader). If you don't allow the fish to get a good swipe, you're gonna look like the village (boat) idiot like I did on Tuesday.

esox 14, I really like Ben's idea, but again a pause is HUGE because if fish can totally miss a topwater going in a straight line, a eratic lure is 10X harder.

One big question I do wanna hear some opinions on is not how everyone works their Phantoms, but how they are figure eighting the bait???? The most I had a fish go with me on was 2 turns then goodbye. Not that I think I did anything horribly wrong but I would like to hear some suggestions.

Phil, I jiggle my rod tip up + down in short pops + do a big circle + also move the bait down + back up as I turn...don't know what else to do unless you could add a small spinner blade to the rear hook eye for a little flash/vibration![:sun:]

I use short twitches and slow pulls of about a foot long. Make it dance, not glide at acute angles for 2 feet one way and 2 feet the other way.

phil-
when it gets within apx. 8 ft of the boat, if i see no followers i just crank it in fast, then swing into a figure "O" (looped oval actually). the phantom has great action as a crankbait so it has the wiggle plus the burst of speed as a trigger.
good luck

It's been a while since I posted originally but I have a bit more experience and a few more teeth marks in my phantom now. Unfortunately no new teeth marks yet this year![:((]
However, I have found that my favorite way to figure eight it and most glide/jerk baits is to make a zig zag back and forth while you make a big circle. Seems harder to do an eight.
hopefully this might help

Although risky,,,,,try them with 35lb superbraid once,,,the action with the smaller diameter line is awesome, you cant zing your casts though or you will snap them off on a backlash

kly

The phantoms I have used have worked very nice, all the casters above have great ways. When you get tired of casting, try flipping it back 50 ft and set your electric on 50 percent. All the ones I own give a lazy side to side about 8 inches and a slight roll. Like trolling a wooden sucker baby.
