| Just wondering were there main differences in the boat come from? I've been in a 985 and love the layout and deck size, but I'm curious to where they cut space from in the 785 and if it would do all that i need it to. with a price difference of around 15k with the same motor, the 785 is very attractive. my last boat was a 681 vs and seemed al little tight for my likings but it was do able.
Look forward to hearing your responses!
Thanks! | |

Location: West Central Wisconsin | When I was shopping for a new boat in 2015, I had a chance to sit in both models on the same day. After fishing from a 1750 Fishhawk for years, I felt the 785 was a little "tight" for my liking. But I thought the 985 was more boat than I needed - or wanted to pay for. As I recall, the layout was very similar, everything was just a little smaller. I left the dealership wishing Recon offered an 885. I ended up settling on another brand but after a year of dealing with a lemon, I parted ways with that boat and stumbled onto a used 985. After spending that year in the other boat, which was a 17.5 footer, I took another look at the 985, decided it wasn't too big and I now own it. I truly enjoy the space. While I don't do it often, I do have room to fish with 3 people comfortably and have room to haul 3 people sitting in the cockpit with gear. But, that's my take on it and I do believe it's a matter of perspective. I've not been in a 681 but, if you thought the 681 was a little snug, I'd be surprised if you find the 785 big enough. If at all possible, I'd highly recommend getting in one - and fish from it if you can. I can't offer a ride in a 785, but I'd be happy take you out in my 985 if interested.

You may want to find out if/when dealers are ordering a 785 and ask to peek at it before its delivered. I had to drive 5 hours to Burlington WI to look at a X190 Tuffy before it got delivered when I was shopping. Hopefully you can find something closer.

Location: Hayward, WI | Without having been in either boat myself, I think you'll see a big difference in the Recon 985 at 99" wide and 19'4" long (big boat territory in my mind), vs the 85" beam and 17'2" length of the 785.
With that said, my Tuffy 1760 is pretty roomy at 17'6" and 85" wide, but mine is also a pretty wide open tiller layout, and the GT (capless) version as well.
I must say I do like the back deck/rear side tank layout of the Recon boats and it sounds like they have pretty nice rod storage.
Maybe others with experience in both boats will chime in, but before buying one I think you'll have to take a look at each to reach a comfortable decision.
