Just wanted to know how often you have to change gears in a Tranx 500 PG.
I brought my reel in to a local reel shop, here in Florida. They said I needed to change gears in my Tranx, because they were worn. It's new and I used it last summer for muskies. I threw mostly double 8's and 9's, with it. Is that typical for this reel?

Bought my HG in march 2012... only basic maintenance thus far. Considering the normal baits I use it with it has been the most durable reel I have ever owned. Bar none

I would ask what areas of the gears are worn. Are the gear teeth worn? Are the slots in the pinion gear what is worn from engaging the reel mid cast? Are you servicing the reel often enough to maintain sufficient lubrication on the gearing?

Ask more about what areas are "worn". I have not seen a gear set on them that is "worn", but abused. I service 600+ reels a year and the only reasons I have seen the gears in these reels need to be replaced are from engaging the reel mid cast and neglect service wise. I have only seen 2 Tranx reels that were used so much the gears needed to be replaced from gear tooth wear. This particular client spends about 120 days on the water.

I doubt they'd be so worn in one year that you'd have to change them, unless the handle prematurely engaged a couple few times as Ryan stated, that might damage them, especially the pinion. But you should be able to tell - if rough or loud you might consider new ones. I've only had one since they came out that were worn enough to replace

There was no mid-cast engagement.
It was brand new when I used it last summer.
I fished with it around five days a week, for about three to four months. It was one of two reels I used most.
I'll go and look at the gears, at the shop. Not that I know what I'm looking at.
They said they have to order parts which cost 45 dollars, from Shimano.
Thanks for your replies!
