Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | So we have a good number of members on the site lately that are newer to the hunt. Why not try to consolidate a bit of info before they ask about these things (again):
Lures:
-must haves?
-trolling essentials?
-affordable options?
Rods:
-yes/no to specialization?
-length thoughts? (hey now)
-carry 1 vs. bringing X number to the party each day out?
Reels:
-all-around options?
-(ugh) for big blades?
-trolling thoughts?
Tools:
-release focused?
-boat essentials?
-reel fix it and misc?
OTHER:
-net?
-rod holders?
-whatever I mssed above.
Yeah, this should be a contest, but my shed full of free stuff is empty at the moment. | |

| First things purchased should be knipex cutters, jaw spreaders, pliers and a good net. | |

| Agree with above. Good hook cutters (and a backup pair), pliers, jaw spreaders, and a net (Frabill Power Catch Big Game, Conservation 9530, or Big Kahuna are the best 3 options).
Best all around rod and reel combo imho is a 9' TI XH with a Toro S61. You can throw almost everything with that. If you want to expand your arsenal later, get a MH and a XXH and you'll be able to throw almost every lure out there with those 3 actions.
Must have lures - Double 10, prop style topwater, rubber (bulldawg or medussa), suick, and a believer. You can cover a lot of situations with just those 5 lures.
A rod holder is great to have, as is a bump board. No need to buy a fancy bump board, they are easy to make.
