I'm setting up some cheap trolling rigs this year TDR rods with some old 6500 reels. What pound mono are folks running? I was thinking of using 30lb big game. I will be trolling smaller baits.

30 or 40 lb big game or use braid if you want to get deeper.

i use 25# trilene XT for short line trolling. 30# big game will be fine, IMO don't have too much line out with any mono.

30, 40, 50 seem most common. I like 30 because you can still get some depth if need be. If you troll shallow most of the time maybe 50 would be better. If you are considering going on the heavier side, check your spool capacity - 50# mono is pretty thick.

From your description it sounds like 30 would be the best choice.

Is there a certain depth you will be targeting??? Running smaller size baits, I'd suggest a 20 or 25 lb test. Your smaller cranks will perform better with a lighter mono!  40-50 lb mono is overkill with small baits!!!

Make sure you are using a 4 foot stranded wire leader ...preferably 49 strand 30-40 lb test....with small baits...

If your using 6500's, get some  snap on line counters!!!

don't think Ill go much deeper then 20feet. I would guess most of my efforts will be around 10 feet or less. Just trying to be at the forage level or above.
