Location: Kronenwetter, WI | So I have a chance to upgrade. Currently running an 1157 bird at the bow and a 5" garmin gps sounder at console. My philosophy is I don't need a big screen at the console because I just use it use it to get to the spot and mark structure roughly. Once I get to the spot, that's when I like the big screen up front (where I fish from) so I can work the map for boat control.

So in keeping with this thinking and wanting to stick with hbird, I'm starting by looking at a helix 9 si at the console and a helix 10 di on the bow. One concern I have is that the 10" helix looks more wide than tall. My 1157 is more square, which I like...seems like the sideways screen is smaller.

Thoughts? Not interested in the whole lowrance vs HB debate, I do like my bird and can easily load all my waypoints that way too.

Thanks in advance.

  | i,like you am not crazy about 16x9 screen shape so i bought a onix that is almost square but there is a much longer learning curve to those units ,not the same as helixs that have same operating menus as your unit . |

  | you will get use to the change in screen shape quick...ID go as big as possible for the SI and 9 or bigger great for DI...think you are on the right track with your thinking |

Location: Aurora IL | If you're going to run it thru the trolling motor transducer you don't need the DI, those transducers don't run it. But with a switch you could have both transducers on the back and toggle between them. You'll like the screen shape once you get used to it. Bill |

  | Unless you aren't planning on using the US2 trolling motor transducer and want to run a cable down the trolling motor shaft, DI or SI is worthless for the front. |

  | I have two helix 9 the bow one is not DI/SI as I didn't want to run a cable. The size is nice and they are super easy to run. I went from lowrance to birds and the different shape as well. Was a simple switch |

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Okay, so NO DI on the bow makes sense....I don't want the ducer in the back for my front graph because by the time it registers a depth change I would be on top of it and too late to adjust.....

So...., I'm looking at the helix 10 gps/sonar.....I can get gen1 for about $900 new or a Chirp gen 2 for another $200.....but, again I'm guessing that means ducer in the back?
