started musky fishing with those and not bad but drag slipped on hookset lost me fishs and once i tryed low profile toros the smoothness pulling most baits compaired to cardiff, sold em and never looked back , get some real musky reels any of the ^popular brands and you will not regret it.

Thanks,i was asking for buddie who wants to get into Skis.I run higher end reels but he's not ready to commit yet so I figured the Cardiff would be a good starting point

You would be better off buying a blow up doll.

I bought 2 to try as client reels a few years ago. One lasted a day the other less than I week. I returned them and got 400B's instead and they have been very good. He would be better off buying a 5500 or 6500 Abu also than a Cardiff in my opinion.

Revo Toro S or Daiwa Lexa. That's as inexpensive as I personally would go, even for a starter. Your buddy will enjoy the sport so much more and likely stick with it, with some decent stuff to use.

No, they don't.  First conventional muskie reel I bought was a Cardiff.  Lasted exactly two days.

What failed on the reels?

I've been using a couple cardiffs for several years without problems.

I've got an older style Cardiff 301 that I used as my only reel for a couple seasons when I was first starting out. I did everything you could imagine while learning how to cast - stopping the bait with the reel, backlashes, trying to reel stuff that's way too big/etc. I've broken a bunch of reels since then, all much more expensive. The Cardfiff is still going...
