Bucktails - Tied on coil or hook?

It seems that many of the lure manufacturers build their in-line spinners with the bucktail tied on coil. Mepps seems to be one of the only major companies tying on the treble. What is the advantage of coil? Is it mainly to stop the lure from spinning? If your fishing with a swivel what does that matter?

Thanks,

I tie my own Bucktails and the only time I tie onto the hook is when I am making a small bucktail, otherwise I prefer to tie onto the coil.

I feel that the biggest advantage to tying onto coil is that if you have to cut the barbs off of the hooks the lure can be easily repaired (I make the hooks on my lures completely replaceable).

If you are forced to cut the barbs on a Bucktail that has the hair tied to the treble the lure is shot and can't be repaired.

Just my two cents,

JOHN B

I also tie them on a coil because this way the points of the treble are free and there are no problems with changing hooks or adding a teaser-tail.

hi. i also tie my own tails and will not tie to the hookss even on small tails i use cabble its easy to change hooks quick. and you can also carry extra wire shafts in the boat with you and cut your premaid tails down and remake a new one with diffrent tails to match the sittuation you want to work with. all the cabble is is throttle cabble you can get it at a local hard wear store or lawn and garden shop i preffer the coated cabble as it seams the wraps hold better on this.
goodluck.

I made some sweet single hook small bucktails for the early season...

I tied the hair directly to the hook, however I picked up some lead wire in the fly fishing department and wrapped it around the hook first....

Added enough weight that it will cast like a bullet even into the wind!

Even added some glass rattles, the Bucktails are pretty much irresistable now...(Except the muskies didn't seem to think so last weekend).

Oh well, it's a long season...

Good luck,
John B

What I do is tie to the coil so I can change the hooks. But, when I am making a big bucktail I always like to tie one on the coil and one on the hook. If you tie yourself, you can always replace the hook with a newly tied one. The reason mepps does tie on the hook is because their tails are cheap and they have to make money somewhere (replacements cost a lot)
