Can the new Helix Gen 2 Mega units run the same transducers as the older Gen 1? (I ask b/c I am looking at potentialky purchasing a boat that had Gen 1 units on it but would like to upgrade to Gen 2 and Im wondering if I would have to switch out the Gen 1 transducers, too.) Thanks.

i asked hummingbird the opposite of your question :can the gen 1 use the mega transducer ? and the answer was no there is something in the transducer and the unit that is different than gen 1 and you would be missing the mega imaging that the new G2 have .it looks very good from what i hear .

I believe the answer to the question is in the middle: the old transducers will work as they used to with the older unit, but you won't get the Mega functionality when using it with a G2 Mega unit.

This is correct. With an HDSI Transducer (standard with HELIX 10/12 Gen 1)you will not get MEGA SI or DI, but you will get 455kHz and 800 KHz. You would just select the "HD Side Imaging" transducer type from the "Sonar" menu when using on a G2N unit.
Since the units come with a transducer, it is worth installing the new MEGA transducer. If there is a high-speed transducer and Y-cable, the Y-cable will need to be swapped out for the new version that carries the MEGA imaging signals. http://www.humminbird.com/Products/MSIDB-Y/
