| I've used the Cortland stuff for pike fly fishing. Used a knot from a YouTube vid and that works pretty decent. Think the vid was posted by Wildwood Float trips - believe it was about musky fly fishing leaders. Haven't had any fish bigger than 22" to really put it to the test though. |

Location: SE, WI. | Muddy; I get lots of people asking this question...but don't remember the name. Learned it from my dad many moons ago. Never had it fail. Dad was an arborist, and new many knots. I plan on doing a video of the procedure because of the many requests on how.....OR, you can call me and I would take you through it...really simple...and use it for all flexible stranded wire leaders. JD |

What knot do you use for this?
I'm a fly guy so I use the Ablright to attach the wire to the end of my fly line. May or may not mean anything to you and musky line. YMMV there..
For the knot to the bait try this guy, it's excellent and SIMPLE!!
It's called a Jig Loop. Tie an overhand knot about 3" from the end of the wire tippet BUT don't pull it totally shut. (Leave it "just loose enough" to insert the end of this wire back into.) Now put the tag end into the hook eye.
Now push this tag end through that overhand knot...that you left loose "enough" but not too loose, right? Now, take and make a 1/2 hitch just behind that overhand knot and snug it up.
Make a second 1/2 hitch again behind this one but this time pull her tight with a pair of pliers!
Done! If it turned out right..and sometimes it doesn't, depending on how tight that overhand knot was...you'll end up with a neat little "jig loop" that your fly can swing freely on!!! |

As my dad explained it, rabbit came up the hole, ran around the tree, then back down the hole:)And yes Jeremy, once you put the tag end through the overhand knot hole, adjust, and snug up that overhand knot....this tightens the knot up real nice and small,(tight)!!!!!! Sometimes, and I rarely use the second half hitch, but it is totally fine. Just adds a bit more bulk, which is not much and really secures the deal!!! After the going through the open loop, and cinching the first half hitch, I put a tiny bit of superglue on the first knot to hold it, then afterward I may put the second half hitch in. A visual would make it easier for people to tie, because there are some detail to make it right every time...practice with some mono, so you don't kink up a bunch of leader wire trying to make it right! JD |

Location: SE, WI. | Thanks Ron, I don't have to make a video now...been a few years since working with dad and hauling brush, and forgetting all the names of knots I've learned  The bowline was a knot I used a lot, and just started tying leaders many moons ago with that knot. I still think there are some keys to getting every thing small and tight, which the Video doesn't show you, but yes that's it!!!! JD |

Yes, it does look very simple.
I can pick me nose without pokin meself in da eye but walkin and chawin bubble gum I'ma still werking on.
I posted the video link for two reasons:
1. To make sure I had the correct knot as described in this thread
2. Sometimes it's easier to learn by watching rather than by reading.

| I love "Rio's Powerflex Wire Bite" for fly fishing...so easy to tie and holds up well. The best loop knot I've found that we use for Tarpon, Muskie and other species is a "Steve Huff Double Figure 8." Best knot I've used and easy to tie. I think YouTube has a video on how to tie it. |
