I started with a 7'6" St Croix Mojo XH with a Abu Garcia C3 6500. Good all around reel and it'll turn into a great sucker reel when he decides to upgrade.
If i had to do it different i'd get a 8' or 8'6" rod instead.

Spend more on the reel imo. You can get a good MOJO rod or Tackle Industries for good prices and get a better reel. You can find Daiwa Luna 300 or Revo Toro S and still be at $350 or so. If you are able go to WI or MN Expo. There are great deals there from the big retailers. Send them to Pikemaster every year or 2 depending on usage and they will last for years.
And make sure you bring him to an action lake if possible. If you go for the 50 right off the bat and your not seeing fish for hour upon hour its easy to lose a beginner.

If $350 is your buddy's limit then go on Amazon & get a Abu Garcia Revo Toro S ($175) & a Fenwick Elite Tech Predator 9' XH ($174) all with free shipping.

Or buy a used reel. A shimano calcutta 400b is a fine reel. I have 3 of them, well one b two originals. Nothing wrong with them, they are just not the "hip" reel anymore. As stated above you can get a decent rod and not spend 300 bucks. You can look for used ones on this site as well.

Must not be a good friend to expose him to this ridiculousness.
What he said ha! The MOJO line is what I started with and after my first year, they held up great. Definitely don't cheap out on the reel, buy a good used reel or as was said before the revo toro s. That was my first reel and, again, has held up great! But... then I became a full blown maniac and I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone what ended happening...
