I'm looking for a high speed reel for rubber, jerkbaits, and occasionally burning blades. I'm leaning toward the Rocket, mostly because it's easy to palm and light. But I've done quite a bit of research, and I don't see much information about it, which worries me.

My question: Is the decision between the Tranx and the Rocket a "you can't go wrong either way" thing, or is the Tranx a superior reel?

Thanks.

Well both. You can't really go wrong with either. They are both great reels. For burning the blades, I think that's where the tranx shines. I personally would go with the tranx. I'm not saying that just because I'm a Shimano guy either, I've always used abu, but I think the tranx has more power. Just my two cents.

If the blades you plan on using are 8s or smaller the Rocket would do great. If you're thinking of 10s it will wear you out fast, the Tranx would be the better option.

The Rocket was built to throw rubber, jerk baits, and baits where IPT is critical to keep the task easy and effective. Burning 8s is easy. 10s will be a bit testy if you try to overwork the reel, but not bad at all if you let the Rocket do it's thing. I can palm the reel, and use it all day without it wearing me out. Works for me.

Howdy,

I don't think anything can compare to the Tranx 500 HG or PG when it comes to power or speed. This includes any of the Abu Toro's or the new 400 sized Tranx. At some point physics always wins, particularly when we're talking about a much larger spool picking up more line with each revolution.

HOWEVER, that also applies to the size and weight of the 500 series as well. Simply put, they are really big reels and really heavy reels, far bigger than the Abu's and smaller Tranx. Obviously that is something you have to take into account as well.

At 20 ounces, which is like taping a full can of Chunky Soup to your rod (and yes, I really did just weigh that on my postal scale) they do add significantly to the weight of your rod over the course of the day. Only you know if the cumulative effect of that would wear you down over the corse of a full day on the water.

Also, while being very economic, they are still big reels which may make it harder to do other things as efficiently (ex-twitch a crankbait, work a glider, etc) on the odd chance you need it to multitask for you.

Finally, I wouldn't be deterred by the lack of information on the Toro Rocket. For one, it was a late season release, and secondly, its not available as a left handed reel. If you research other really fast reels, like the bass sized Revo Rocket, you see the same lack information. This leads me to believe that ultra fast reels simply don't sell as well regardless of their performance, largely due to the longstanding lack of power associated with them prior to bigger gear cases and longer power handles.

For what its worth, I've used both and the Rocket is really nice. I say that as a lifelong Shimano guy.

Take care,

Ruddiger

Im with sworrall here...The tranx just too big for my liking and can get the rocket good bit less money...The Rocket be better overall IMO all purpose only way I could go tranx is if it was dedicated big blade reel and that all I was doing was burning 10s all day maybe but like sworrall said if you let the rocket do its thing just a thing if beauty

I do not think these to reels should be put in the same class. The 500 is in a league of its own. If you really need a comparison to the Rocket then you should be looking at the new Tranx 400. The 400 has a bit more line capacity while still having an IPT of 40 and a bit lighter. $100 cheaper too. Perfect for ripping big dogs out on LSC all day long.

I have both and what I have found is that if your going to have a tranx you need a light, strong, and well balanced rod. The shear weight of the tranx alone can make the whole setup feel so heavy. I paired my tranx with a big nasty because they are so light compared to my TI rods. I put the rocket on a 9 foot xh TI rod and it feels great. For the tranx if you plan on palming the reel I hope you have some big hands. some of my fishing partners cant palm the reel. That's where the rocket is better is that it is smaller and can palm the reel better and it weighs about half the weight of the tranx. Me personally where I palm the reel I only use my tranx for blades, surface lures, and big cranks. Lures that have a strait retrieve. For everything else I use the Rocket, the Beast HS, and the revo s.
Hope this helps
