I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on my long awaited custom rod. I'm going 8'9" H with a 17 or 18 inch rear grip. That's about all I know. I was hoping some of you could post pics of your Thorne rods because if I'm going to spend the money on a custom I want it to look good too. I'm most interested what you guys did with the fore grip (I palm so the fore grip is useless to me so I just want it to look good). Also what color wraps you did you do on the guides. I know this is a dumb thread but there isn't many photos of there customs online, and whenever I think I made up my mind, I end up changing it. Photos would be great. Thanks!

I just hate that shredded look to it not smooth at all IMO it took away from the finish of the Rod..I really wanted to go syncork but once I saw how it actually look on the rod I just couldnt do it..

I wasn't a fan, but my buddy goes 100% syncork and took fine grit sandpaper and sanded it smooth, and I will say it feels pretty great.

FWIW..... As a guy who has 8 Thorne Brothers custom musky rods here is a thought regarding Syncork....Are you looking for a tool or something pretty? Either is fine, some guys like a neat looking rod. I had Frank build a musky spinning rod with fancy wraps and what not so I get it.... But if you want a more effective tool you want some syncork....I have syncork on all my TB rods. The improved grip when its cold, wet, slimy etc is beyond comparison .. I would rather have something a little less aesthetically pleasing on my $800-$1000 rod/reel combo and know it its more secure in my hands than having something "pretty"... Just one man's opinion...

If i were getting another rod made and it was a split grip I would get all syncork. If I wanted the full handle I would get syncork up front and regular cork in the back as syncork will leave marks on clothing if pressed up against it for long periods of time.

I should have mentioned this originally but I plan on going regular cork. I also want it full grip. So to me, since I palm my reels, the fore grip is pretty useless to me. That being said, I think that regular cork looks nicer. The question that I was asking was about the shape of the grip and color of the wraps etc. now with that being said you got me thinking about a syncork now. So any photos you have would be great. I just want to take a look at some finished products before I make a decision. Thanks.

Nice to know, thanks. I have 4 Thorne Bros. rods, all close to the same 7 1/2 MH bucktail sticks (they're nice) and one has Syncork and I've never used it as it felt a bit "rough"... Maybe it's time to try her.

I think I'm going to do one like that, with either black and silver or blue and silver wraps to match the nacl that is going on it. What's that shape fore grip called? And how long is it? I want one sort of like that just a little beefier. I know this is a bad photo to use as an example but do you think if I sent thorne this photo they could make the same shape fore grip? It's the only one I could find on Google that looked like what I want.

For you guys that use syncork and like it, what can you compare the feel of it to? It almost has a plastic look online. I've never got to see or hold it in person so I don't know. I was against syncork at first but now I'm starting to consider it. Is it super hard? Or is it soft like regular cork? I know regular cork isn't "soft" but I can't really find a better way to explain it.

Here's my collection of TB Predators. I think most of the thread colors end up darker on the rod than when you choose the thread in person. I would strongly suggest going to the store and/or handling a lot of rods before choosing your custom. It's on you if you don't like it as they are custom rods.

I prefer full syncork because it is light and tacky even when wet. Doesn't get hot in the sun either. The bottom rod was my first one and I have been using it since the start of the '2010 season and the handle still looks great. After a few seasons they get a bit smoother.

I did plain foregrips on mine as I mostly palm the reel. The 2 longer foregrips are 5" and the short ones are 4". The top one is what they call a "full wells" and if you use the foregrip they are really nice. Depending on hand size you will want at least a 5" and possibly a 6" if you have big hands.

My only regret is I did standard fuji guides. Every year I think about bringing them in for new sets of Torzites. The top one is my wifes and it has the torzite guides. MH blank and it is lighter than most of my bass rods. But it is really hard to justify spending 1k on guides for my setups.

Lonnie dose great work you won't be disappointed. Lonnie will help you through the process I'll be getting a new rod this year .I'm picking up a 400 Tranx so I'm putting that on my buck tail rod and having a new buck tail rod built going 9'6" predator

I live in chicago so I can't go to the store and feel the rods. I think I got it all down except the material for the fore grip. You think I can ask them to send me a ring of syncork so I can see how it feels?

Mo, it's not as smooth as cork but it's not objectionable either.

Don't let my previous comments sway you too much, I just bought that stick because it was the only one avail. in that config. when I was looking pre-season. Very soon after I had my others made so my synthetic just sort of sat.

How does it feel? A bit rougher than typical cork, maybe "granular" if I put an adjective on it but you soon forget that when you're casting. I use mine now and like it enough so I forget about that material when I'm fishing.

Small 'taters.....

Here is a pic of the full wells fore grip. You can also get the rear handle in straight or with a small or large flair on the end.
I have never tried the syn cork. People seem to like it but I've never had any issues with real cork and like the traditional look.

I had a 9'8" xh predator and sold it because of the syncork. I did not like the texture and it rubbed my arm raw from use all day in the summer. It is grippy, but it is air injected polyethylene. It is not rubbery in my experience and gains its grippy nature based on the texture. All of my rods are St. Croix and the feel was too strange when switching rods. I have since bought another predator with full grip and a 5" foregrip and torzite guides. WOW!!!

The super light guides really are a difference maker. I have a Predator H with 2" off the tip at 9' with Titanium Oxide guides and a 400D. It weighs about as much as a heavy bass set up, but will throw everything up to a mag dawg. I have all Syn Cork on all 7 of my customs. Wouldn't hesitate to buy it on #8. Much better grip than the regular cork.

I had somebody PM me about the 2" off the top thing and I was curious how well it will handle small buck tails after that. I believe the smallest i throw is a juice mini. I'm not necessarily looking for a large bait rod.

If you go with the heavy action it will Handle smaller blades great. I throw ghosttails 100 series and dreamcatcher mini's ( both smaller/lighter than a juice mini ) and it does a great job.

Sorry to bring this up again but I ordered my rod today and sent a pick of the fore grip like the one I posted above. Like I said, I've seen it in syncork quite a bit, but I was hoping to get a better pic to send Lonnie at thorne, so if anyone has this style of fore grip in either reg cork or syncork I would appreciate if you could post a pic and also include the length of it if you know it. Thanks.
