I voted 100-200, but that is just muskie baits. I assumed that is what the poll was for.

I've only been at this about 5 years, I already have a couple hundred plus baits...it's a terrible and beautiful disease all at the same time. It does help that I get to fish a hundred days plus a year tho!
If were talking all baits like bass baits and jigs etc. I'm well into the 1000+ range...

I was the dumb guy that bought a bunch of baits before I had figured out what I even liked or what works. When somebody makes the "Im just starting out what do I need" post and gets the "wait to drop a grand on lures" responses I laugh because Im that guy. Now Im 5 years in with a couple hundred baits and I use only a handful of them (Still trying to get better at using just those ones).

Somewhere in the 100 to 200. I don't consider myself a bait hoarder or collector and I'd certainly like more, but I don't see a need to have piles of them. I probably cycle throw 30 a year and add 5 to my arsenal every season.

WOW... Almost 50 votes and I'm the only one in the sub 50 column.  I have around 30 baits, and I bet I'm one of the few who can say I usually catch more fish each season than the amount of baits I own.

My entire "collection" fits in 4 planos... Blades, rubber, cranks/Topwater/glides, hooks/qsr's/shrink tube/tools/etc.  The hooks and tools box is the most full!

Thinned the herd a few times after the "musky stupid" phase. Probably down to 150. Of those, a good 30 are duplicates of proven lures. Another 50 are lures that I can't justify selling for 30 cents on the dollar before I've even thrown them once.

All in all I probably have 30 productive lures...

Well I'm probably around 100 baits, but I have 3-4 duplicates of the baits that I've had success with. There are not any musky shops here in PA so I don't get much temptation to buy more. That being said I've bought a few lures this winter off the site I hope to learn how to use. Mainly the H2O hardheads and an undertaker.

I used to have 400-500, but have managed to cull the herd down quite a bit over the past number of years.

I put my lures in different categories just for my own sanity

Active list - includes 11 I picked up this off season
22 topwaters
72 bucktails / spinnerbaits / crankbaits
20 bucktails just for my family vacation or trips to Hayward waters

Inactive / Injured Reserve
57 - Very old lures from my grandpa, old lures I purchased, old lures given to me

Collectors
18 - Musky Hunter / Lelures / Misc I picked up over the years

I have never really counted but I would guess from 150-200. I only buy baits that I know I'll use and after using a particular bait for several years, if I'm finding I no longer use it or like it, I sell it. I probably add 5-10 new baits every year and sell the same amount. The last few years I have been adding more custom cranks than anything else, which will never get sold because they're the only one in existence.

15,000? Did manufacturers send him baits to test?? That is a crazy number of baits. If I figured it right, it would take you 41 years to buy that many baits if you buy one a day, every day of the year.

I honestly have no real clue as to how many musky baits I have. So, I guesstimated with my answer in the Poll above.

So many baits stuffed into boxes and cabinets in the garage and boxes in the basement over the years. In my late teens, early 20s and into my 30s...I was a lure collector. Used a lot of the lures over the years, but then some were just collected. Then came marriage and kids and so the money that had once been spent on lures, dried up and was put towards what raising a family demands. Priorities changed. I still have all of those lures from my childhood, through my teens, 20s, 30s and now into my 40s. A lot of what I have, are duplicates of high producing, confidence baits.

I guess somewhere along the way, I finally decided, the boat can only fit so many, there's only so much time on the weekend trips anymore to throw only so many baits, my time spent on the water anymore these days has become less and less and less and less with each passing year due to kids growing up and becoming more and more involved in sports and activities that is pulling me in different directions, I had grown tired of building more storage cabinets for more baits in my garage, I've run out of space in the garage and I've grown tried of the collecting of baits. I guess at some point, I changed my line of thinking from..."Oh...I Gotta have this and that bait and in multiple colors that it's offered in" to...."well...this is a high producing bait for me...a confidence bait for me...I would like to stock up on back-ups of this bait...now...while I can...........for the idea....that...maybe...juuuuust maaaaaaybe....I'll be so fortunate enough to one day 'retire' from working and actually get BACK to going fishing and actually get to USE some of these baits?!?!"

So the thought is....I'm stocking up...now...while I still can...while I can still find some of these favorite baits...because one of my Bucket List ideas...if I should be so fortunate enough to retire some day....is to fish my a_s off and use these baits till they can no longer be used and I'll be ready to clip a new one one because I stocked up years ago. Sure...new baits will always come out and hit the market to replace the favorites from yesteryear. I'm sure the new baits that come out with have hooks on them too. As they're merely only tools to help catch a fish. And when we boil it down to the simplest of terms: "If it's in the water, and it's moving: it's food." Present the bait in the right place, at the right time, in the right conditions and good things will happen. No matter the bait's name, manufacture, or era it was produced from.

Stupid idea? I dunno. Or...maybe I'll just up and sell off the bait collection at some point? I dunno...we'll see when I get there...

I can honestly say this though: I have enough baits. I have all of the types/categories of baits that I need. I'm done collecting. What I need now...is more TIME to use the baits that I have. Now if a new bait needs to be purchased is only to replace something that I've destroyed and no longer have anymore back-ups of.

North of 8 - It was an interview and yes many were made by wannabe muskie lure manufacturers sending the stuff but many were bought by him - he also said he had outbuilding built to store them and felt that maybe it was time to downsize - I'll look around for it - Interesting piece of muskie lore - - - -

Since I retired, I live about 20 miles away so I get there a couple times a year. And yes, I understand the comment about the credit card. I was there late last summer to buy some new line and some leaders. That was all I needed and wanted. However when I got to the checkout a Phantom was in my hand as well. Have no idea how it got there ;>). My wife went with me one time and while she doesn't fish, she laughed when we left and said "I don't know how a fisherman could go in there and not buy something".

I've Got 3 Just Encase deck boxes in my boat, ! 24-24 and 2 15-36. ! box for Jerks and Rubber. ! box for blades and one for cranks. Out of the 200 plus baits I carry you can bet that no more than 8 or 10 are top producers. The other baits are there just to "confuse" other anglers. I can't carry any more so the only addition I will make is a cassette tape player in the live well making flopping fish noises at the dock!!!

I'm probably at around 100 total even though I've been fishing for muskies for about a decade. I have been pretty good about only buying stuff that I know I'll use and I've retired many baits over the years that now hang on a wall. I think it's quality over quantity that's the right approach for musky baits. I typically only use about 10-20 lures in a given season, so I make sure not to get into the pattern of buying everything just for the sake of having lures.
