| Just wondered how the fishing/weather/insects are in September compared to July?
Been pretty hot the last couple Julys, and way crowded as well, thinking of trying later this year.
thanks! |

Location: Duluth, MN | Everything is better. The only downside is the days are shorter. Try and go during a new or full moon phase. And throw topwater, the fish are shallow and hungry. |

| I hope I am not hijacking this thread, but I feel like this question is relevant.
Can somebody give me a break down of how Sabaskong Bay changes from month to month in July, August, and September. My father and I are trying to decide when to go back this coming year. We went in early August this year, and we had a really good time. But we are wondering how the months all differ, and we are just looking for some good insight.

Location: Duluth, MN | I've been there in July the last 5 years. Last year we got lucky and went the week before it turned 85+ degrees but typically you will get some hot sunny days. It can be downright miserable. There is a lot of boat traffic. The resorts are all full. But the muskies are just starting to get going and can be just about anywhere...you have to commit to going out early before things get too bright and hot and of course your hitting evening bite. No algae to speak of yet so that is nice.
September is my favorite time to be there. You can literally not see a boat for hours at a time. The water temps will typically be 55 to 65 depending on what time of month you go. Don't go too late as you don't want to hit some unseasonably cold weather. I do not book anything too much in advance. I watch the extended forecasts and book something maybe a week to 10 days out so i don't get caught with bad weather. Perfect time to see more activity shallower. There can be LOTS of algae. But last year there was not much at all and we never had trouble fishing any spot. But the year before was the absolute worst i had ever seen. It was literally thick pea soup in most places. But we still caught fish. I'm not going to go over patterns and baits as your typically throwing just about anything...just see what works for the day. Everything will work when the lake turns on. My best evening was 8 follows and 3 landed in a 2 hour new moon window a couple years ago. But you can also see nothing. It's easier to fish all day so just keep grinding and you will hit a window at some point.
Will be interested in reading others peoples experience.

Location: Contrarian Island | I have not been there in Sept but here would be my take... you have shorter days as mentioned but you will see a lot less pressure than July/Aug.. look at all the musky "schools", "bootcamps" and "outings" that are held up there in july / aug...it is getting silly with how many guides etc are putting together outings... but later in the year like Sept as mentioned as well, you roll the dice with weather a bit more... you could get a nasty cold front that could turn fish off or pull them off structure that time of year... muskies move shallow in Sept pretty much everywhere so imo thro topwaters and bucktails shallow and you will get bit.. a couple of the musky tv shows that aired this year were in Sept and they plugged away shallow with toppies and bucktails w the occasional big minnow bait... I personally would love to do a late aug/early sept trip someday if nothing else to avoid the masses in the summer
good luck! |

| I like late Aug/early Sept..end of Sept is my least favorite but no bad time to be on lotw - you just need to be mentally ready to fish the bloom, and may need to run to get out of certain areas if its overly bad. .. I've found it a time when you can find "packs" of muskies in a small area...I've also found sometimes aggressive fish move back into "spawning bays", I've had good luck getting away from the "main lake" rock that's been getting pounded for months, in Sept. Good luck! |

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I only went to LOTW once in September...pretty solid trip! Done Eagle and a few others in September over the years..
Good - less pressure. fish returning to early season spots, no bugs,
Bad- bloom, "Indian Summer" can be a negative, short days limit your overall hours...less hours, less contacts to convert into catches.
