Location: Knot on the WATER | Appreciate any input who ever decided to keep there stock gauges over the optional Mercury Digital Gauges or choose the Merc gauges over stock, and why in comparison, motor will have is the Verado 350. Thanks Musky First World! |

| So a different forum has had people talking about smartcract and monitor, I didn't really spend any time when I boaught my 2015, I have analog tack, and that's about it on my optimax pro xs. In hind sight I'm glad I didn't spend for more monitor or smart craft, sure it would be sweet to see gallons per hour and temps but I know I monitor that stuff in my truck a lot, if I had it in the boat my "autocondriac" behaviors would distract me from fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Merc has "guardian mode" and other performance limiting settings built in and obviously the beeper. I'd save the money myself now that I have thought of it. |

| Dont know about which gauge package you like. I think its a personal choice.
I do know I would never run an Optimax without a temp gauge. Look up "cold seize". You will get no warning and it is only prevented through proper operation and temp monitoring. |

I'm about as far away from an expert on cold seize as it gets but it only makes sense to me that running a hot motor full throttle in cold water is a lot different than running it full throttle in warm water. The cold seize can happen after the motor warms up idling in cold water, and then abruptly cools down on plane. I might have blown up a motor in the fall of 1988 (no gauges) because of that, but still try to run slower and vary the RPM in cold water.

| Ahh, cold seize... Stuck thermostats... If you know your boat and know a new water pump is 5 pounds a idle, and a used water pump is 3.8 to 4 pounds at idle........... And then you have none to .5 at idle your thermostats are stuck open... Don't plane out given the piston will be hot and expanded and the block is cold and tight, water pressure guage when monitored prevents cold seizure. |
