Hi guys,

Heading up to Pipestone Lake near Emo, Ontario this summer. Staying at an outpost cabin on Slender Lake (connected to Pipestone).

We have some guys in our group that may be bringing kayaks. Would it be possible for them to portage into Kishkutena via Summit Lake?

As I'm looking at topo map # 52 F/4 ("Kakagi Lake"), it appears as if you could portage into Summit from Slender, and then paddle the creek between Summit and the east end of Kishkutena. I'm just curious if that's possible to do.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

So my first trip to Canada was I believe 1989 and I was 11 at the time so take this for what it's worth. We stayed at a lodge that was at the boat portage between Clear and Pipestone lakes. The portage you load your boat on was right by the resort and we mostly fished the upper lake which I believe was Pipestone. During our stay we ventured north? up through Pipestone and into a bay where we accessed a portage into Kishkutena. Kishkutena was such a draw as I think it only contains perch, smallmouth and muskies. But a lot of muskies. The portage was pretty long, at least how I remembered. We had to drag the camp boats, motors, gas, gear and everything down old logging trails, over downed trees, rocks and through the bush. Was quite an adventure.

I'm sure a lot has changed over the years but I remember that trip and portage very fondly. I've since come across a few articles on Kishkutena over the years, one good one in MuskyHunter a few years back. Always wanted to make it back up that way again as I got hooked on musky fishing after that trip. We hooked a giant on Clear one evening but never landed it. After that it was all downhill for me as I was hooked on musky fishing lol.

If you make it up there and to Kish, love to hear how the trip went.

Thanks for the reply, Esox1850. It's not until the end of July / beginning of August, but I'm already counting down the days. I'll be sure to post a report on this forum when we return.

In looking at the topo map, and in reading between the lines here and elsewhere, it definitely looks possible to get into Kishkutena from Slender / Pipestone. FYI - the lake immediately north of Clearwater is most commonly referred to as Weld Lake on all the maps I've seen.

It's certainly doable with a canoe. When we were on Kishkutena in July 2014, a young man and woman were passing through on a 9-day canoe loop. They started on LOTW (Baudette I believe?) and were making the exact same route you're describing, only in reverse. They had portaged from Nestor Falls, through Wigwam and Marl, and into Kish. Their next stop was Summit, then Slender, then Pipestone. They needed a place to stay to get out of some impending severe weather so they slept in one of the empty bunkhouses on our island. Early the next morning they left and we last saw them dragging their canoe off of Kish toward Summit. Checked in on them a few weeks later after we returned home and found that they had completed their journey as planned. Seemed like a pretty cool adventure. I love fly-in trips, but that kind of trip is probably a little too adventurous for me.
