Looking to upgrade mine. Any opinions on side imaging vs down imaging? Or would you opt for both? Humminbird vs Lowrance? Kinda thinking Helix 9, just curious what you guys think. Thanks.

if you can afford it get the 10 ! more pixels +hd transducer= clearer images .the 9 has the same pixel count as the 5 and 7.

You'll find a million and one opinions on Humminbird vs. Lowrance. I've had both and have no complaints about either. Side imaging vs. down imaging? No question, get both!

Humminbird sure seems to have an "out of the box" advantage. I have run my 999 si and a hds9 gen 2 side by side and the bird owns it in image quality and mapping but not in 2d sonar. Also as said above if you can get a helix 10 that's my vote. Other than solix 15

I almost sold my Lowrance last year but after going to 3D imaging, I will absolutely stay with it now. If it were just side and down, I was going to change to Humminbird, but if you can swing the $1700 or more, getting the Lowrance HDS Gen 3 with 3D is great. Huge advantage is I can also use side imaging out much farther even in shallow water, which is so huge for bass fishing for me. Identifying logs and rock structure 100 ft away in 4 ft of water is awesome.

I have been on the water with the Humminbird Helix 10 CHIRP MEGA SI G2N unit (includes MEGA SI and MEGA DI) and the images are incredible. I have attached some shots from the unit. Unfortunately, I can't take credit for these. Someone I know took some of them and the others are from Humminbird.

Wow that mega SI is incredible! Can that transducer be used with a helix 9 from last year or only the new units?

MEGA technology is built into the unit via processors/hardware and also requires the new transducer, thus, there is no way to update Gen 1 Helix units via software or just a transducer.

Are those pictures of actual spots you have seen or are they the pics that are loaded in the simulator mode?

All but the last two are from the water. The tree and bridge are two shots I shared from Humminbird. If you look carefully in picture number two, there is a bike hanging over the edge of the pool.
