I started out with a 7'6" XHEAVY. It was a ok rod not great but not bad eather. After my first year i wanted a buck tail only rod. The next year bought a rubber. And so on and so on. Now I have a set up for what ever i want to throw from small buck tails to 2 pounders . It comes down to how much money you have. I started out with St Croix rod's when I knew what i wanted i bought a Thorn Bros custom rod now that's all I use .I do have one TI rod for back up or if someone needs to barrow a rod.

depends what you wanna spend $100 or $150-$200 or $300plus

I really like the 13 fishing omen Musky rods for around $150 price point Love the St. Croix Legend Tourament if you wanna spend $300plus

If you wanna spend under $150 talk with Tackle Industry he give you a hell of a Rod for great price...love their rods for the Money

Tackle Industries 9' XH I use mine to throw 8's and topwater a up to mags. I don't like throwing mags with it but it can be done. Step up to the XXH you gain some on the high end but you will lose a little feel on the low end. They are both great rods.

A 9' Tackle Industries MH would work, too. Before I succumbed to the "need" for 5+ rods in the boat, I used this for nearly everything. It may be a lighter rod by today's standards (and the massive lure craze) and not great for big rubber, but if you are just starting out I think it's a good fit because you are going to be casting A LOT and it's a comfortable (yet very capable) rod to use all day.

Regardless of what you pick, I'd say set the big rubbers aside and stick with the 8s, 9s, and smaller rubbers, etc., until you've started seeing fish and recognizing the patterns, because a big lure (regardless of the rod) will wear you out pretty quick. And then if you want to tie on a mag dawg to try and close the deal, the Ti MH will handle it. Just be gentle with the cast!

[/QUOTE/]

THATS two opposite sides of spectrum money wise....Id start with the TI and see how you like that rod and what type of baits you like to fish the most then buy more expensive rod that really fits what you are doing otherwise you be like me buying 6 different set ups as you learn what and how you want to fish...on the other hand you go with Big Nasty or Big Dawg you can throw about anything just lil heavy to throw smaller baits

Tackle Industries 9' XH will run baits from Double 8s up to pounders. The sweet spot is 2-8oz for casting.

Sweet rods. If you are at any of the Musky shows in 2017 stop by the TI booth for a closer look.

If you are looking for a decent rod on the cheap, Cabela's has their Predator Musky rods marked down to $105 to $112 depending on the model.

So you are telling me Im cool throwing pounders on this Rod? Ithink that rod I got from you but shorter..think mine 2-10oz or 2-8oz cant remember this why I am asking didnt want to throw a lure 3-5oz heavier than the rod claims to handle but you would be the one to know...or is the 9XH rated higher than the 8-10oz?
thanks

If you are occasionally going to throw pounders then the
XH is ok... If this is going to be a dedicated Mag/Pounder rod then no, the XH woudl not be the best rod, the XXH woudl be. If your goign to be using it as a dedicated pounder/2 pounder rod then the XXH or even the XXXH would be a better choice.

I would go with either stcroix mojo or premier 8'6" h if in a budget or LT sling blade. The premier has a shorter rear at 14" and mojo at 16". I believe these are the best choices for what you what to do.

Yes. No problem. Soft enough tip for mepps marabou and plenty of back bone to throw 8oz baits. I've thrown everything in my tackle box on a mojo 8'6" h. If you want 1 rod to cover everything in a musky box this is the blank.

By the way the newer stcroix 8'6" h is rated 3-8oz. The older ones where 2-6oz. It's the same blank but they just re rated them. This is with all series ( mojo, premier, legends )

What I dont get is the Big Dawg goes up to 12oz lures and is there heaviest so I would assume this is their pounder Rod but isnt rated high enough any ideas here

Was original designed for rubbed big wood and cranks. This is before everyone was throwing pounder. It was also a fail safe for stcroix as from what I was told, if your throwing a lure heavier tjen the rating at the time rod broke you void warrenty. You still got a new rod for $50-$75, depending on series, guys where coming in rip casting Pounders and breaking rods. Then complaining that it was manufacturer flaw. Rod ratings are really just a suggested weight.
If you cast with 2' of line out from tip to leader and pendulum cast, you take almost all stress off blank. This was talked about in previous thread.

Go with the Tackle Industries. Customer service is excellent, product is excellent, and James has supported us here for years, offering several rods a year for contest prizes and more.

Great business ethics from that company, too.

13 Fishing has a nice new rod as well, and it's about a buck and a half.

Also figure you can get an XH and XXH TI for the price of 1 big nasty. You will be good from Mepps to pounder.

I'd say they perform well. The TI is better in the fit/finish category. And, TI muskie rods carry a lifetime warranty.

There are some great fishing rods mentioned in this post and you cannot go wrong with any of them. What I picked up on your post and I might be wrong is "a rod." Like many fisherman, especially those new to musky fishing, they are looking for one rod to throw just about everything they have. My suggestion would be pick a stick that can handle the heaviest bait you want to throw and then start thinking about future rods that would perform better throwing your smaller baits.

There is a gap in the two baits you mentioned.

If you are looking for mainly one rod, I'd recommend the TI XH. You can basically throw everything. I have the TI XH and Big Nasty, both are great rods. I like the overall feel of the BN better( I like the palming handle), and use for smaller bucktails, reg/mag rubber, glide baits. I like the TI XH for larger blades 9s and 10s as it has a stiffer tip. For the price you cannot beat the TI and the customer service is excellent. Good luck!

I love my TI XH 9' telescopic rod! Gonna buy another one in XXH this year for big rubber. I use a St Croix mojo as well and it's a great rod, but not as great as the TI. The customer service from James at TI is second to none. He makes amazing products at affordable prices.
It was mentioned before that you could buy two TI rods in XH and XXH for the same price as a big nasty, I would for sure go that route if I were you. The cork handles on these rods are big and comfy, making them easy to fish all day. They don't have a palming seat, but I don't miss that feature. The telescoping mechanism works perfect, never had issues with it. Makes storage and transport much easier. The rod locker on my boat is 7'10 so these rods fit perfectly (a 9' rod goes down to 7'6'').
Anyways hope this helps. Counting down the days until spring....
