I am going to be making my own spinner baits this winter and I was curious to as if you guys had any suggestions on what gauge wire you think I should use. I like throwing smaller profile spinners such as the booyah's but this passed summer i actually had one snap in half with a nice fish on boatside. I would like to stay on the smaller side but use some thicker gauge wire for the durability. Any thoughts?

Heavier wire will be more durable, however you will lose vibration because it is more rigid.

How small is small?
I use .051, same as on bucktails. Mostly make 1 and 1.5oz baits. You can get .045 but will lose durability. Should be fine for 1/2-3/4oz baits though. I generally use a single blade, tend to cut the arm short which increases vibration. I use my spinnerbaits to fish reeds and slop so I prefer the durability. Watch your bait and stop using it if it gets really beat up. Fortunately spinnerbaits are pretty cheap to make.

Also look at the pre-made versions with the weight/shaft already poured and painted. They are fairly cheap and all you have to do is bend, add some blades/dressing/trailers and good to go. I believe most of those are .051 wire and you can cut these down to match profiles.

I would contact Dick Moore of Moore's lures. He has premade spinner bait heads you can pick up a number of wire from .045 to .061.

Yeah it was a brand new Booyah out of the package and it was the first fish on that lure I had hooked into. Usually they last me about 2-3 fish then I retire them. Thanks for the info and yeah when I make some ill upload some pics of them. The one I like to use is a single colorado blade weighing in at a 1/2 oz. I also like throwing one similar just with a bigger single willow blade. They seem to rip through vegetation quite well.
