how do you fish deep divers in weeds? I'm getting pretty good at twitching a slammer deep diver and a baby depthraider through weeds (well, not through thick weeds but through some serious cover anyway). It hasn't paid off yet (water temps are 23-25°C over here) because pike aren't really active. I was wondering what lures you guys use for this type of fishing and how you fish them

Mike, you seemed surprised by the discussion. How would you approach this (you don't fish weedbeds when the temps are up?)

You can do it. Fish with the rod tip up and give short taps like you would give a glider but with much more snap. What you want is to give the bait a thump, not a thump thump but one thump. Thumping it more than once with put your bait into the weeds. It takes a rythum and a bit of getting used to but not all that hard. It's a great technique that produces a very erratic action.

Divani:

This is off topic, but I saw your post and had to send you a message.

I saw Dick H. a couple of weeks ago and he showed me the bait that you made and donated to Smokeys benefit last Dec. What an fantastic looking bait. He handed it to me, I took one look at it and started to walk away with it. I didn't get more than two steps when his big hand grabed my shoulder and spun me around. He took it away from me. LOL!! I'm going to stay at a resort with him later this fall and will ask if I can throw it and see how it looks in the water!

Thanks again for your donation to help Smokey.

Chief -

Divani is fishing for pike. With high water temps the majority of large fish are absent from the weedbeds. Generally, only the hammerhandles are active in the weeds with high water temps. That is why Mr. Pike was surprised.

fishpoop LOL! I heard from happy hooker that he liked it and I doubt you'll get further away from him than one step next time. He'll keep an eye on you from now on!

His second bait will follow in 3 weeks. It's painted white now.

Todd, that's the info I'm looking for. What lures do you use for this type of fishing?

mr pike, over here we haven't got muskies, just pike. But they are great to catch! I'd have to say they get a lot bigger over here. And lots of waters where I fish have abundant weed beds right now. Pike tend to lie in them or at least close to them. They don't come after shallow running lures right now so deep divers twitched aggressively tend to work better.

Years ago, when I did some serious Pike fishing, I used live bait or a jig and large plastic. Fished the deepest hole at the thermocline or ideally I fished the spring holes. Found the spring holes in late fall while watching the lakes freeze and tried to file them away in the memory bank. Found some real pigs in some very pressured lakes this way.

hey chief whats up....its just that big pike are scarce in shallow waters when the temps get up there. i like to fish deep rock humps/piles somewhere in the range of 15 to 35 feet.

Divani, so far I have tried it with a triple D, 6" deep diving grandma and a 6" ernie. I have others to try this out on. I think the deep invader may do it as well.

I think the small ernie will work well because it's buoyant

The 5 and 6" Slammer are perfect for this. I use both in the heavier cover, just popping them through sometimes letting the bait surface each pull. The Pike hit them VERY hard, and usually are stuck, too.

I used to fish Bass in Illinois that way. Cast the lure out, let is sit for about 5 seconds, then twitch it. Pull it under a couple feet, let it surface. Repeat. Pop it through the weeds while doing this. The last few feet reel the lure steady to the boat and 8.

Works for me!

Steve, thanks for the heads up. Given the slammers wide distinct wobble, this might be the easiest bait to work in this fashon. The bagley db series may also do this trick well.
