| I recently bought a 01 Crestliner Angler 16 with a 40 horse four stroke Mariner. I'm having a lot of trouble planing out at low speed or rough water. A friend suggested trying a hydrofoil on the cavitation plate. Anyone have any experience with one? What brands should I consider? I'm not really excited about drilling holes into the plate - will it screw things up if I take it off later?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Before you go that direction, I would have a shop test the prop for W.O.T- RPM to be sure you are propped right. I see underperforming boats alot; usually everything BUT the prop gets blamed, yet that is what sets the hole shot, top end, and cruising RPMs. |

Location: MN | Should not have that problem. I run a 1600 Angler and my Evinrude 40 hr 4 stroke planes out in seconds.
Check the prop! I had an 11 1/2 X 13 (OMC recommended) , but RPM's hit 6000 WOT. We went to 11 1/4 X 14 and it runds great!

| Thanks guys for the help. I will check into the prop. I need to get a spare anyway. Tahoe what can I expect to pay for another prop? It looks like we run similar set ups. Is your 1600 a tiller?

| What is WOT? |

| I believe it's "wide open throttle". Is it possible to test revs at WOT without a tach on my boat?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The shop you have work on your boat will have a 'shop tach' they use to hook up to rigs without an instrument cluster. That is the only way. Wide Open Trottle is right, sorry! |

| So you want lower RPM's at WOT, correct? What would be best? |

Location: Cohasset, MN | Usually to get best performance (hole shot and top speed) out of your setup (at WOT) you'll want to be in the upper half of whatever the WOT range is for your motor. |
