Location: Elgin, IL | Need some advice. Wondering if my 2 year old C4 needs new reel brakes. I've got the knob cranked down as far as it goes, but I can't even tighten it up enough to keep a light bucktail from free-falling when I depress the thumb bar. Needless to say, after fighting backlashes for 4 or 5 consecutive casts, I put the reel aside.
I'm not overly familiar with the guts of my reels. Avoid messing with them except for the occasional lube job. How would I know if the brakes are worn down? The reel has only been used lightly over two years. (maybe 15 full days on the water) Is that typically too soon to have problems? Hoping there was something I could do myself before replacing parts or bringing it in for repair. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

Providing all parts are still in place, I would try cleaning all of the lubrication from the reel and then very lightly lubricationg it as directed in your manual to see if that solves your problem. |

Location: NeverNever Lake | I would start by replacing the shim, part #20917 for all of 13 cents, they tend to wear a hole in the center. Generally I only put enough pressure on the spool to prevent lateral movement, and rely on centrifugal brakes and thumb to keep the birdies away.

Location: Kalamazoo, MI | My guess would be the plastic piece that fits over the spool axle (part 20090 on the picture RAZE1 posted). The little plastic teeth that hold on to the spool axle wear out. Or it may have just spun enough to let go of the spool axle. The flat side of that part goes toward the cast control cap.

Location: Elgin, IL | Lot of good suggestion guys. Thanks. Short of ordering parts online... anyone have any idea where I can buy parts locally? I live in the N.W. burbs of Chicago. Thanks again.

| I reccomend you contact Hatterass Outfitters and purchase a set of Smooothie Drag washers, much better than original drag washers. Ask for the free installation instructions and you will get tips on proper lubrication of the entire reel. They also sell all kinds of upgrade parts for the 5000 and 6000 series reels. |

Location: NeverNever Lake | Good one Spieg! You're probably right, I didn't even think about that 1, those 2 parts do work hand in hand with each other. Both parts prolly under a buck. |
