Lets say you are working a small bay (alone) with cabbage in a small lake that consistently holds fish...how many baits will you work this area with before moving on? Often I will work it with a topwater to see if any fish shows itself then try a blade bait and then will move on. If I still feel the fish are there I may then try a jerkbait. If a pattern emerges throughout the day I usually head back and work the good areas with what I think the fish want. What do you do?

If the weedbed is extensive, I work it over with a glider first, then a spinnerbait/bucktail from a different angle, and if nothing shows but I feel the fish are there, back off and throw a jig to the edge and first few feet of the cabbage. Nothing goes, I'm out of there, for at least an hour or more unless something in the weather changes. Topwater is conditional for me, but if I have two anglers in the boat, topwater will be out the same time as the glider.

I will work the area with a lure and if nothing happens, when I come back to it, I will go with something else. Same with trolling, if nothing goes, I will make a change, be it a bait of the amount of line I have out.

I almost always go with a jerkbait first, like a suick, something you can rip through the weeds without too much hangup. There are many jerkbaits out there but I like the suicks. They get through the weeds the best. I will work the bay with that and I may make 1 pass through with a Top-Raider if it is early or late in the day. But as far as mid day goes I will use a jerkbait, sometimes but very seldom I will use a bucktail. It is just the way I fish and it works very well for me.
