Have any of you encountered a lake where the muskies that inhabit it seem to defy all common logic? You know... hang out in very weird places.... prefer strange lures.... and well... you know... seem to defy all commonly accepted habits and behaviors of the musky????

I've been exploring a new lake that has supa dupa clear water and the fish in there are really throwing me a curve ball. I figured this lake would be your classic suspended bite with a few deep basins and, from what I can tell, lots of cisco.

The suspended pattern appears non-existent. Beautiful rock piles with boulders that dump into the basin are empty. Abundant shoreline timber into 20+ feet of water are sterile. What's up with that????????

Only place I've seen fish is on featureless shoreline breaks. Preferred lures are surface baits (super topraider in the rain, and a topraider in 45 feet of water) and spinnerbaits in the fringe of shoreline lily pads.

It seems to me that the secret to this lake is to think of the last thing that you feel would work... and then try it. Kinda fun cause you never know what to expect... yet frustrating as all heck.

How do you guys deal with this type of situation???? How much time do you invest in a lake before scratching it from the list and looking for another one???

Depending on what you've heard about it, how you found out about, how well the musky population is thriving, etc, I would stick with it. Chances are, if you're have that much trouble with it, others are too (and have probably given up on it). Not really what you wanted to hear...

I've got some time and lots of patience. Let me know where it is and in a few weeks I'll give you a report as to what is working.
