If you are a member of Muskie inc. go to the lunge log. A ton of catch data on any county including Vilas. BG

Here's a hint without giving out names.... Find lakes that are away from main highways with terrible launches.
And when all else fails, there are just a ton of muskies in the Eagle River Chain.
If you are going up there, hire a guide for a day or two and have them show you a couple of different lakes. Get a little confidence and some "jumping off" lakes. Lots of good guides up there and some aren't overly expensive.
If you can get Mark Rottier from R&M in Eagle River to get you out I guarantee you will learn a ton and he will get you on fish.
Rob Manthei is another one that will get you on fish right away...

There's so many well known lakes, just buy a map book (Sportsman's Connection has a Wisconsin Muskie Lakes book and a Vilas County Area book). There's three big chains in Vilas--Eagle River, Manitowish and Lac Du Flambeau--and two in adjacent Oneida county--Minoqua/Tomahawk in the northwest and Three Lakes in the northeast. All are pretty reliable bets. The only issue is they tend to get a lot of traffic. Outside of that, there are tons of smaller lakes up there and sometimes you just need to explore. If you want to beat some traffic pick lakes that have an access in the state forest (some folks don't want to pay for a sticker/launch fee), or as Vegas said further from highways and poor launches.

I would advise to get a good book of Vilas county OR go to any of the bait shops or gas stations and pickup individual lake maps. They have individual maps marked with multispecies and community spots that are great introductions to the lake. I like fishing further north like Boulder Junction or Mani Chain areas as they are a little further out and away from the Eagle River or St. Germain and Minocqua areas that tend to be busier with traffic.
So many good lakes and I found that most of the bait shops were very willing to give good advise.
