In regards to lures only and casting
Wondering what has been your experience, success or lack of on non ciscoe more softer bottom lakes,,like your classic perch, bass, panfish, weed dominate water when the water temps dip below 40 degrees ????
I can say very few fish based on the hours spent, just more of a case of getting out last few times and going through the motions.

muskies don't look at water temp gauges... they eat the same baits they do in the 40s or 50s... plastics, swimbaits, gliders, jerkbaits,bondys/fuzzys, and suckers are all good choices

Yes, but they feel the change in temps.
Suckers may be your best bet.

suckers are indeed a good option but I've had good action on artificials up to the day before ice up with fish up to a super fat 47" ....

In lakes where bluegill are the main forage, jerkbaits and rubber in the weeds have worked.

In lakes where perch are the main forage we do better with bondys and fuzzies at the base of the breaks.
