It is circunstances. Water was pretty warm by then but if it is the lake i am thinking of the weeds in shallow would certainly have increased fight time. The guy's intentions were genuine stuff like this unfortunately happens. I had a 48 die on lsc, short fight, not hooked bad and unhooked quick and was dead to the world before we ever took it out, healthy looking fish too.

They talked about weeds and if the fish got tangled in heavy weeds, it can be tough getting them out. I had a fish in the 40" range get tangled in heavy lilly pad stems several times in the fight and each time I had to pull hard enough to put a heck of a bend in an 8'6" XH rod to get it loose and it even pulled the boat toward the fish. I eventually had it come off close to the boat.

Interesting that it is a "spotted muskie" which aren't supposed to do well in Illinois (can't imagine why not, as they do very well in many other states!).

Larry their survival rate it low but every once in awhile one will grow big. Return on that investment isn't good.

In Illinois these fish only have 1 job ... Get big and get caught. This fish did it's job so the fact that it died really doesn't matter. It isn't making new muskies or anything. He probably should have left his muskie gear at home with water that hot that time of year, but none the less ...

Congrats to the angler.

I agree, that is one big Muskie! I personally rather release all Muskies I catch, but understand keeping one if it dies in the release process. What is the current water temperature and what is considered normal for this time of year?

Once again, congrats on a once in a life time fish especially in Illinois...When will the bleeding hearts just pat the guy on the back and not critique what he did wrong or should have done...If these "fisherman" are so concerned about hurting a fish then stop fishing for them with giant trebles and then cry when they get injured...Everytime someone posts a picture of a fish I cringe when I read the remarks..Enough already !

Hopefully IL will continue to NOT stock spots. They do not survive well in our waters by investment.

Not many lakes in Lake County that have been stocked with spots. The few I know are catch and release only...

To be clear, if this is indeed a spotted fish, it was not state stocked. FRV and SOB have stocked spots, FRV in the chain and SOB in the chain and other waters. This is probably an SOB stocked fish. FRV is stocking other strains now, the latest from wisconsin.

My PB is also a "54"! Brings back some memories...of just 2 seasons ago! Luckily she still swims.

That's an awesome fish by anyone's standards!

A 54" in Illinois is like a 59" in Minnesota or Canada. I thought we'd never see a giant like that in Illinois!

“The certified weight was 35 pounds, 10 ounces. Length was 54 inches; girth, 22 1/2.”

The 800 formula works out pretty well for this fish because it was dead, the live girth would have obviously been greater… 23-23 ½”. Just something to consider if you use the 800 formula to estimate the weight of your release.

Almost all fish fight harder/longer when they can completely close their mouth, especially if she could rest some here and there in the weeds.

Congratulations Jim Hack !

It's my hope that if I ever catch a fish like that, it swims off strong. But, sometimes they just don't.

I wont be surprised one bit if someone catches a Illinois Muskie bigger than 54'' in the near future.
