Hi Guys, which motor to choose as their the same price on my new Lund. The issue is Honda dealer 35 minutes from home.Zuki dealer 3.5 hours. Of course Zuki 25 extra horses and would prefer it but dealer distance could be an issue. Is the travel time worth the 25 extra ponies? How much performance difference? Input or advice appreciated!

nice boat ,congrats ,from what i read here it does pretty good on a merc 150 4s ! is the performance of a honda similar ? isn't honda getting out of the outboard business ? i would say go big but 3.5 hours for dealer is a lot .

Also Guys this is my last boat so I need a motor to last 20 years even if I don't use it alot. That's why I shy away from the 200 4 stroke Verado. Heard nothing but great things about 6 cyl V-Rod.Just dont want a SC problem down the road?
Thanks,
Gman

I think the dealer distance gives you your answer.

I bought a Honda because I wanted a motor that started every time, without any trouble ever. So far that's been my experience, and I haven't met anybody who didn't share the same experience. With that said, Suzuki supposedly makes great engines. I have no experience with them.

Did you consider yamaha?

Yes but the most expensive. When you buy a Lund which is owened by Merc and get a motor other than Merc you lose discount between the two as they have it wired. So on average a different comprable HP motor is 4-6K more for no reason other than collusion between essentially one company.

Why not the 6cyl verodo 200? Wand what is SC problems? I have concluded that any new outboard should be great for a long time with a good operator. Why not a new two stroke? Many old ones have been running more than two years and much more good technology these days making them run better.

Gman- I don't think the 25 HP is worth it. I bought an X-190 earlier this year and I went out of my way to get a F175 over the 4-stroke Merc 150. I agonized over the decision and I ultimately thought that I didn't want to go at 75% of the max HP and I kept thinking about top end speed. If I had to do it over again I would get the Mercury 150. Both for the savings and the ease of convenience since I had to jockey between a Tuffy dealer and a separate Yamaha dealer. Somebody asked about a Verado? With the digital controls it cost 6K to go from a 150 4-stroke to a 200 Verado. That ended that conversation.

The speed just doesn't matter to me. I find my going 35-40 mi/hr as my normal cruising speed. Sure, when I got the boat I went 55+ a couple times but I haven't been at WOT in a couple months. I just can't justify the cost to be able to get an extra 3-5 mi/hr top end. I know people will talk about resale and max HP, blah, blah, blah but the reality is that the Pro V Bass is not a go-fast boat and there are a lot of those being sold with a 150 on them so I wouldn't worry about resale. I wonder the number of them being sold with 150 vs 200. I don't know what you are used to riding in but 50 mi/hr on the water is fast enough for me. Those are both awesome engines. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Both Mercury and Lund Boats are owned by Brunswick.

Now that I reread your post- for the same price I would drive the 3.5 hours for an extra 25 HP. I paid nearly 2K to go from a 150 Merc 4-stroke to a Yamaha 175. And are you getting that flat black Suzuki? That is such a cool looking motor.

Don't want the extra 100 # of weight. That's the weight i.m saving for my kicker motor. Plus cost a lot more.

For me the extra 25 horses for the same price is a no brainer. Go with the Suzuki.

And in reality you shouldn't even need to worry about having a dealer nearby as those things should be bullet proof.

All are good motors nowadays. I've had my Yamaha F80 since 2001. It's been in the shop only 3 times in 15 years.

i've owned big blocks 200-250's and mid blocks 150-175 and would do what i can to achieve performance i desire and stay in a 175hp motor. playing the odds of one asking you to spend big money at least in my experience over the years made me lean heavy to the mid-block motor selection.

if a boat max HP rating is 200, i would put a 175 on it ... and i bet i'd be up and flat quick, have a top end of 52-54 mph and cruise nicely at 40mph. ... with low speed flat running (15-20mph). that's what's important to me but everyone has different needs.

spending that much money and making that decision should be done only with a test drive. if a dealer can't arrange one, find a dealer that can. you won't know til you drive it, so why would you spend without knowing the most important piece of information?

175 suzi is a nice motor... course I blew one up...but bought another... one thing to remember, no matter what mftr it is, there are always some that break.... 6 yr warranty on suzi's... 150 merc is a nice motor too I'm sure, tho I would opt for more hp than less...

My Honda is smaller than 175 HP, but has 5 year unconditional guarantee, starts up instantly every time runs as quietly as you could possible expect as is fuel effect. I would say Honda makes the best motors out there, Personal opinion based on experiences.

Funny hearing all this Honda praise. I'm sure it was just a bad apple or they have came a long ways in the past 10 years, and I'm not even sure what happened to it but by grandpa had a 35 or 40 tiller honda on his rebal that was the most cold blooded sob in the fall of the year. He ended up putting on a 40 mercury efi in the early 2000's and that runs like a top. Like I said I'm sure it was a bad apple.

Both great motors...I'd go for the extra HP if the buy in is the same.

I'm on my 2nd Suzuki DF140. Flawless performance, quiet, cheap on gas, gets the job done.

...these days, you have to work hard to find a bad outboard.

This is the second thread titled "Honda vs Susuki" in two months that have had comments about "Honda is getting out of the outboard business". I'd be interested in hearing where this info is from. My limited research found nothing supporting these comments. Actually found news releases that Honda is introducing all new 4-stroke BF4 & BF6 along with redesigned BF5 this month along with an earlier nationwide distribution of it's all new BF100 starting 01-04-2016.

"The all-new Honda BF100 outboard engine will be available at Honda Marine dealers nationwide beginning on January 4, 2016. All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use, including the new BF100, offer an industry-best True 5-year, non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first."

Doesn't seem to me that Honda is getting out of the outboard business.

I've also have the Suzuki DF-140 but on a Tuffy 1760 and I like it a lot- 8 yrs. not a thing wrong. 42 mph top speed, great hole shot. Very quiet, good on fuel. It also trolls down so very well with no vibration, I do not need or have a kicker..
